Mayday Hardware Store on Washington

This is the 2nd time I bought something at Mayday Hardware. Both times I came home to price the item on Home Depot website and found that Mayday charges more than double. I bought a circuit breaker for $15.00 there and Home Depot has it for $6.25. I'd expect is to be a little higher than Home Depot but that's ridiculous.

Do an advanced search (link is at the top right) you'll find at least a couple Mayday threads with people who agree with you. That place sounds bad.

I don't like this store. They seem to have inferior quality products at inflated prices and I'm not too into the people who own the place.

Sister's Community hardware on fulton by washington or Pintchik on flatbush and bergen are worth traveling a little farther for. The place on franklin by St. Marks is ok in a pinch as well.

As the name implies, this store should only be used in dire emergency

The owner is a real asshole. Racist, arrogant, you name it.

People have been complaining about getting ripped off at that place since the earliest days of this board.

Here's an example from a few years ago:

Thanks all. I won't be shopping there anymore. I will say that the guy I dealt with was nice and helpful. But that doesn't do me much good if he's really ripping me off.

Can anyone explain how they stay in business? On the rare occasion I'm in there, I never see anyone buying stuff. Plus, there's hardly anything to buy. And the stuff that is in there looks like it's been there forever.

The guy who runs the store also owns the building. When one doesn't have to pay rent, one can apparently have all of the above "qualities" and still make ends meet.

As mentioned above, Sisters is a good option, or go to Pinchik if you need customer service.

Lowes if you are going to spend more than $100 and have car....

The stuff I bought there was also covered with dust and looked used. Wasn't even in a box.

In emergency, I go to the place on Franklin and Bergen, prices are OK, service is too.

This is my favorite hardware in the neighborhood.
Friendly and know what they're talking about.

Home Depot will usually be cheaper, but the downside is getting help and directions at the store.

I concur with the prevailing views on Mayday. I go there in a pinch, but the store is badly stocked and the owner's bad treatment of his employees makes me uneasy.

Mayday is what it is -- a ghetto hardware store with slow turnover of dusty, stale, mostly off-brand merchandise that's nevertheless priced higher than merchandise at stores with higher turnover. Caveat emptor.

I take issue with those of you who say that Jerry, the owner, is racists, sexist, etc. who treats his employees badly. I don't know the private thoughts of his employees, but they seem to keep working for him for many, many years. Sowejo, they guy with dreds, was about 5 feet tall when he started working at Mayday many years ago.

Sowejo - totally nice, reliable fellow who has fixed locks for me several times should clearly be a valued member of Jerry's core staff. Yet last time I had Sowejo do locksmith work for me and went in afterward to pay, Jerry was saying the nastiest semi-racist things about him to another customer. It was intolerable, as has been Jerry's patronizing, faux patient tone when you ask him a question about the difference between this product and that. What's more, and frankly least importantly, he sold me muriatic acid to take care of some excess grout issues and said, and I quote "it's just like water" in terms of harm to the skin and other surfaces.....and yet it took the chrome off my brand-new fancy bathroom faucet when a dripped spilled on it.

It's his nastiness toward Sowejo and others that I have witnessed that keeps me out of that store, even though it's the most convenient hardware store for me to patronize.

FYI, muriatic acid is another name for hydrochloric acid.

This guy's brother owns Loves Liquors, and has a similar attitude. I am a 30 -something female and I know my wine and booze. If you ask him any questions, he makes sure you feel like a moron. Since there aren't any other liquor stores around, I have been going there for a few years (the selection kinda sucks though) He still cards me and my husband even though he has rung us up probably over 100 times in the past 5 years.

Mayday is absolutely ridiculous and disgusting. They also seem to water down their paint. My husband got into an argument with the owner over the quality of a paintbrush that had a $25 price sticker on it. He's a real jackass.

I have to agree that the owner has some lousy attitude. He does appear to be racist and obviously missed the customer service 101 course. I never returned after going to get a Medeco key cut and he wanted all sorts of id and everything short of my blood and the way he addressed me was a real turnoff.

I am pleased to announce that Mayday has some local competition!

A hardware store quietly opened on Atlantic, near Vanderbilt a few weeks ago.

It is within walking distance, and on the PH side of Atlantic.

It is much better than Mayday.

I believe that's the Sisters Community Hardware's new location formerly on Fulton and Washington and also formerly known as Sister Mother's Hardware i believe...

My link goes to a new hardware store, known as Hardware 2.0.

Sister's is better than Hardware 2.0. However, Hardware 2.0 is closer.

I'll have to check this out the next time I'm in the market for some hardware.

I notice that they have an online ordering option. It would be great if they could do it so that you could do an in-store pickup. That service is a huge timesaver, especially when I know exactly what I want.

Wait, did Sister's reopen somewhere else? I liked them.

I'm amused that Hardware 2.0 will let me order a washboard. I'm not as wild about how I put it in my cart, and four other, unrelated items wound up in there as well...and now that I'm starting checkout, someone else's address and e-mail is already filled in. So that's interesting.

but! I can confirm that "pick up at store" is an option for shipping.

    Bad Samaritan has it right:

    - Sisters on Fulton has closed, and Hardware 2.0 is somehow affilated with it.

However, I also believe I am correct:

    - Hardware 2.0 isn't as good as Sisters was, but is MUCH BETTER than Mayday. For example, Hardware 2.0 does not custom make Benjamin Moore paint, whereas Sisters did. For example, the "qualities" documented in this thread possessed by Mayday were absent when I visited Hardware 2.0
