Someone managed to change the sign indicating the upcoming street closures on the corner of St. Marks and Flatbush to read FUCK RATNER instead. Both NY1 and News12 are there.

The suckitude of the Nets is completely irrelevant in the discussion. NBA fortunes can change dramatically with one or two free agent signings or trades (e.g., when the Nets got Jason Kidd and went from perennial doormat to two consecutive NBA Finals).

There are plenty of reasons to protest the development, but the idea that the Nets will continue to stink when they move to Brooklyn is not one of them.

Honestly, I wouldn't give a shit no matter where the stadium was. We're better than that. Getting all excited about getting a sports franchise is something for shitty towns that don't have anything else going for them.

Again, regardless of the arena issue, isn't it possible that in this huge city with an incredibly diverse population (and an even more diverse range of interests) that there might be people who have some interest in a local sports franchise?

It seems fairly snobby to take the "tut, I live in Brooklyn and am above that" attitude when the borough has a colossal bball history and such a huge pool of people who would likely become rabid fans once the political fervor dies down. It's not that I think Brooklyn needs a team for identity -- it's that I like basketball and would like to have a local team to root for.

the basketball team will be somewhat novel, but I don't understand the fascination.

As I keep pointing out, the arena (like all arenas) is going to keep itself filled with what ever will book it...

wrestling
circuses
disney on ice
trade shows
annoying motiviational speakers with bleached teeth
Hanna Montana concerts
etc

next night: men leaving a sports venue
