cops just came to get access to our roof; building on my block getting robbed, thieves getting away, cops trying to find them.

as chaplin'smom said a few months ago, people she knew had apartments broken into when windows weren't locked--and windows that weren't on fire escapes. ladders? spidermen? who knows, but i know and trust her info.

lock you doors!

Years ago when I was living half a block from the Gowanus houses I had a window by the kitchen sink. I was looking out the window while washing dishes and saw a man hop over the chain link fence from the next door yard, run through my overrun with weeds postage sized backyard and then hop over the chain link fence on the other side. A minute or two later two coppers, one with his gun unholstered, jumped over the same fence, the one not brandishing his weapon stumbling and falling. Real keystone like, By the time I looked out the back door everyone was gone. I looked out the front and the street was crawling with cops and blocked off. I watched the proceedings from my stoop. After an hour they all left, no perp in tow. Later when I talked to a neighbor he was very blase about the whole thing. "Happens all the time," he said. But for me that was an exciting day.

I had my apartment broken into when I lived in Washington DC back in 1994. They stole a camera and my brand new bicycle. It totally sucked!

So True! I got my renters insurance through USAA and it was super cheap. I don't remember exactly how much it was - but I think it was in the $10-15/month range.

My apartment was robbed hardcore in Prospect Hts... took everything of value. And they gained access through an unlocked window near-ish to the fire escape. Then one of the little creeps let the whole crew in through the fire escape. Given the time frame and how much they took, the police think it must have been at least 3 or 4 guys.

    I did not have insurance.

I now have insurance. State Farm. $125 a year.

^ how much coverage does $125 get you? those numbers don't mean much unless you also know that it pays you X amount of coverage. Once I started going through with an agent the cost of the valuables in my house (I *thought* I didn't own anything, but if I had a fire and lost over 40 business suits, 2 computers, a huge tv, 100 pairs of shoes......DON'T JUDGE...ha), it all started adding up and I upped my coverage.

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I went with Met Life

I have a "basic" policy... i have (again) some valuables, but nothing really special. You're right it adds up.

    My policy:

    $15,000 "actual loss"
    $500 deductible

    $100,000 personal liability

HOWEVER, there is the key bit of reality.... Insurance companies will do EVERYTHING in their power to pay as little as humanly possible on a claim. Unless you pay all sorts of cash (and lots and lots of cash) on a "replacement value" policy that favors you and have an itemized and validated inventory... you're gonna get what they decide your crap was worth and what they decide you actually owned at the time of the burglary.

All things equal, I bet I'd get as big of a check from the insurance with my $15,000 policy as, say, a $30,000 policy.

Is that cynical? Yeah, probably... but probably pretty fairly true.
