Census workers in building late at night????

Does this sound super sketch to anyone else??

I just wanted to mention that when I came home late this evening - about midnight -- there was a young man and a young woman sitting in the vestibule before the lobby. I thought maybe they were high on dope or drunk or something just because they were sitting and not really moving around or anything. (Seemed like downers to me!) I asked my ex to walk me into the building in case the situation was sketchy.

I asked what they were doing there and they said they were census workers essentially staking out some building across the street....they had bags, badges, the whole nine yards. They definitely seemed lucid and sober and had all sorts of credentials...should I call the cops or just assume this is some sort of poorly planned legit activity?

Does anyone know anything about this?

Sounds a bit off to me. Maybe call the local census office and ask? There's four Brooklyn offices, not sure which is covering your hood but find a list here:

I have two friends who are census workers in San Francisco. I sent them your note and asked them what they thought.

One writes, "Sounds about right. The census doesn't know it's head from a dragon's ass."

yeesh. it was so creepy! i am going to ask my super if he knew they were doing it...i just wonder if it was trespassing that they were sitting IN my building (before the door that locks)

If you don't want them there, ask them to leave. They don't have a right to camp out in your building. They're probably legit (trying to get info on households who didn't send in their forms), but if they're trying to check out a place across the street, they have no business in your building and are just trying to catch a weather break like any other drifty person. So it's your call. If you're uncomfortable, kick them out. It's your building--not theirs.

I know this sounds weird, but maybe they were trying to catch people when they were home. Still if a census worked knocked on my door at midnight there would be no way I would open the door, so I don't think the technique will work very well.

Are you sure this isn't some new reality series?

If anybody knocks on my door at midnight they get pepper sprayed as a way of saying welcome to my home . You can always add jamming a pencil into their chest cavity. Nobody should be at your door, waiting for you in the lobby or looking to follow you into your apt. Personal safety trumps gov dollars for an accurate head count. Plenty of posts about sexual assaults from fake salesmen, would be repairmen, fake cops and cableguys and guys hanging around in the laundry room.. 8pm is civilized after 8 is not a good business practice.whatever time the Girl Scouts recommend ceasing cookie sales should be the guideline.Girl Scouts are the only people I want in the building after 8.As brooklynleather explained..they were there checking out the bldg across the street from inside her bldg. Perfect pepper spray candidates
