No fire hydrant - why?

I've lived here for four years now and have never quite figured this one out... My block is Park between Carlton/Vandy. One side of the street has multiple fire hydrants, one does not have any at all - not a single one on the entire block. Why?

The water mains run down one side of the street (not in the middle)...the hydrants are placed on the side with the mains to minimize the amount of underground piping.

I've always wondered why all the hydrants are on my side of the block.

So in the event of a fire, they'd need to stretch hoses across the street to reach the hydrants?

Yes. And if you are parked in front of the hydrant they need to use, you run the risk of them breaking your windows to pull the hose through.

They always have to stretch a 5" from the hydrant to the engine (pumper truck), regardless of which side of the street the hydrant is on. From the the truck, they stretch handlines, feed the ladder trucks for aerial operations, operate deck guns or even feed another pumper in the event that there is a great distance from the water source to the fire and there isn't adequate water pressure.
