Loser that I am the Newsmap on Gothamist isn't enough for me. Is there a public Police Blotter or does only the media, like The Brooklyn Paper, have access to that info? TIA

hmmm. Gothamist provides the most up to date stuff, but doesn't give you the smaller crimes (like burglary) that the Brooklyn Paper covers.

the nypd will give you weekly stats, but they lack narrative...

This site just covers recent murders:

Do super crime geeks still use scanners?

OMG You are either a cop or bigger loser than me. What is your profession?

Scanner? Sounds tempting, but I have been dodging having a Blackberry & this is kind of the same thing.

hmmph. I did have to research that answer.

I am a bigger loser than most, but am satisfied with gothamist.

...so I might be less of a loser than you. [I know that was mean, but couldn't resist]

Interesting follow-up question: I'm in the market for a new car. I'm actually curious as to stats regarding car theft and year and make of car. I've owned what is traditionally one of the most popular cars on that sort of list (a mid-90's Honda Civic), was thinking about a 2010 model, but would actually back away from it out of wanting to avoid being anxious every night.

Do precints actually keep lists like this?

Unless you have indoor parking I would worry more about dents and dings from just being parked on the street. I have had my car broken into numerous times and have learned my lessons:

    1. Get a Club with an airbag protector (even if you have an alarm system).
    2. Make sure your radio is removable or has a removable face.
    3. Pay the little extra $ to get full glass coverage.
    4. Never leave anything in the car that even "looks" valuable. That includes lose change on the seats.
Remember if a criminal wants something they will find a way to get it no matter how many alarms, locks, etc.
