Tensions remain high at a California high school where four students were sent home this week for wearing American flag T-shirts to school on Cinco de Mayo in what an assistant principal considered a possible provocation toward Hispanic students.

As the story gained wider attention, about 200 Hispanic students from Live Oak school skipped classes on Thursday to march to Morgan Hills city hall to express their displeasure over the action by the four on Wednesday on what many Hispanic students consider the equivalent of a national holiday.

"I think they should apologize 'cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez told San Jose's KNTV. "We don't deserve to get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."

Parents of the four students, meanwhile, meanwhile, said the boys were just being patriotic and displaying their individuality.

The boys, who have since returned to school, said administrators called their T-shirts "incendiary" that would lead to fights on campus, KNTV reports.

As the controversy swirled, the school district issued a statement calling the incident "extremely unfortunate" and said it was investigating.

"While campus safety is our primary concern and administrators made decisions yesterday in an attempt to ensure campus safety, students should not and will not be disciplined for wearing patriotic clothing," the statement read.

During Thursday's march, several cars and trucks bearing American flags repeatedly drove past the crowd, The Morgan Hills Times reports.

The teens responded by yelling "Give us respect!" but some screamed obscenities, the newspaper reports. At least three people driving yelled derogatory slurs at the largely Hispanic group.

But they weren't sent home b/c of some misguided bias against Amerucah, the principal thought there was possible provocation and confrontation.

Whether s/he was right or wrong, this isn't the most egregious thing ever.

Bah, why discuss the real issues in play here when it's far more amusing to put this forward as proof that 'Murikans are in danger of losing their heritage (whatever that means).

It's a call to the "drum circle" of moral superiority. Park Slope Men are examining their smooth soft hands. The women are feeling moist. My wolfhound Pavlov is starting to drool.

The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.

My sister tells an entertaining story of a Town Hall style meeting she attended while in college.

Basically, the city she lived in was considering an English Only law for publications and signs. Lots of local, white supporters of the proposed law were present at the meeting and their leader stated something like "I speak english, this is an english speaking country and the bible is in english".

The next speaker at the microphone, a college professor, pointed out to that he had learned the bible was actually written in Hebrew, then translated...
