A question for Prospect Heights MOMS

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I'm posting here in the hope that some moms or dads can give me some advice. I'm beginning to think about day care for my one year old, and don't know where to start. (I'm new to PH) I had two recommendations that haven't worked out because they're all booked up until 2050... I know there are a lot more in Park Slope to investigate, but what about our neck of the woods? Anybody know of any private day care arrangements that are fantastic - be it PS or PH?

I'll check out anywhere that somebody recommends to me.

Thanks in advance.

There's a Yahoo group for Park Slope Parents, if you haven't found it already:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PHeightsParents/

You might have to become a member to view it, though.

We sent our first son to Temple Beth Elohim/Garfield temple in on 8th/Garfield in PS. We're considering Union Temple on Eastern Parkway (where Eastern Athletic is) for our second son. Both have great reputations, and there's no need to be Jewish to enroll in either (we're not -- not that there's anything wrong with that).

I don't have any recommendations for daycare, but wanted to let you know there is also a Prospect Heights Parents Yahoo group as well. It's not as active as Pk Slope Parents, but it's more local to PH. I think Union Temple only starts from age 2, as does Garfield Temple. I've heard good things about Eladia's Kids on Flatbush and I think they start young.

ok, this is a great start. I will check out all of the above. Didn't occur to me that there were jewish daycare centers that i might also consider.. great, broadens the options.. and there's one on Eastern Parkway? That's right near me. Eladia's kids rings a bell, have I seen that on parkslopeparents.org? possibly.

thanks guys, this is a good start.. I'm looking all these places up 8)

if you're interested in a specifically jewish place, kane street kids is the only place around that has full day options. we do the trek from ph and it's well worth it. 875-1550, director is joyce. take a tour. newest, nicest place around.

The 2 temples (Union and Garfield/Beth Elohim) are preschools, not daycare. There's a place on PPW around 3rd St called Chai Tots which is Jewish daycare and they start around 18 months I think.

    Subject: Eladia's Kids

Eladia's Kids is a great option. I think they even have an opening right now... my daughter is there and we love it!

I've sent three boys currently ranging in age from 5 to 10 to various pre-schools in the neighborhood and can tell you about our experiences at Huggs (Pres. St. bet 7th and 8th), Beth Elohim and Chai Tots. I know a bit about Union as well, and I know lots of people who've sent their kids there and have some there now. Feel free to pm me if you like.

I am with The Brooklyn Ink covering a story about child care access in

Prospect Heights. I was wondering if you could put me in touch with

parents using informal day care in Prospect Heights in people's homes,

maybe due to economic reasons, because other centers are too

expensive. This would be a multimedia story, print and video, based on

interviews and footage of the day care center or facility as part of

our Brooklyn Under the Radar project.

@rebellis, I passed your name along to one person on these boards who I know has this kind of an arrangement going on in Prospect Heights. Hopefully he will contact you.

    Anybody else??

Serious question, but Rebellis, do you think you're going to get anyone to go along with this story? Wouldn't these daycare arrangements be in a legal gray area? Though I totally understand why they exist and why they can be a very good option for many. I'm just in a curious mood tonight.

Wow, way to unearth a dead thread, ahaha!

It's crazy how much has changed in 5 years. PH is a stroller nabe now just like Park Slope, but back then it was just starting. :wtf:

Good point - @rebellis, you have a tough story to write--ironically, "Brooklyn Under the Radar", yet based on multimedia interviews and video. What was that again about the tallest blade of grass?
