Thank you! That is exactly what I am looking for. I'm imagining that, due to its huge size, there are still plenty of places like that in Brooklyn. I'm also reasonably familiar with the area and it's where all of my NYC friends now live so it seemed a good choice.

the boardwalk at Coney Island or Brighton Beach is a must imho -- you can get a beer on the boardwalk at either stop, but at Brighton you can get a shot of vodka with the russian mens who hang out all day. Go to the place furthest from Coney Island on the boardwalk strip of bars and restaurants - it's the divey one. Or at least it was two years ago....

Brighton is also a hoppin' Russian scene at 1am on summer nights.

Thanks! Day 1 might be the B/Q line. Anything cool near any of the Flatbush/Midwood stops between 7th Ave and Brighton/Coney?

There are tons of old dive bars throughout the borough. Try the Irish Haven (4th Ave. and 58th St.), the Green Isle (around 5th Ave. and 57th or 58th), 773 Lounge (773 Coney Island Ave.), Jackie's Fifth Amendment (5th Ave. and 7th or 8th St.), and Shenanigan's (Caton Avenue, just off Coney Island Ave., it's about the size of a two car garage). While it's been taken over by hipsters recently, Hank's (3rd Avenue and Atlantic) still has some great old barflies. As Alafairnadia mentioned, Mooney's also fits the bill.

Sorry, 773 Lounge is accessible by the Q train to Cortelyou Road. Shenanigan's is about a 10 minute walk from 773. Enjoy!

Is Montero's on Atlantic still open?
