I want to help my neighbors

My neighbors were just evicted. They both lost their jobs, he got sick, they got behind on the rent. They are sweet, wonderful people and need a place to live in the $700 a month price range. He is better now and he will be able to collect Social Security when he turns 62 this month, she has found odd jobs in the neighborhood that help pay the bills, so I don't think $700 a month is stretch for them. Obviously, they will not get a palace for that amount, but they don't expect to. I know there must be places in the Nostrand and Park Place area that rent for that amount. There's nothing on Craig's List. Any suggestions?

That really sucks- sorry they're going through all that. CH is cheap, but not that cheap....are they really bent on staying in the neighborhood? Maybe further south in BK....

What about contacting the Department of the Aging - they may be able to get some assistance for housing or maybe even be eligible for some type of public assistance to help.

Good luck and hope it works out for them.

Whatchuwant - yeah, I know but this is their neighborhood and they'd like to be as close as possible.

stacey - thanks, I didn't know of that dept. I'll ask them if they've checked it out. I think they may be on some sort of public assistance now, but I'm not sure.

I'd suggest that you try and enlist the help of Assemblyman Kamara's office. Since they are also his neighbors, he might be willing to make some inquiries on their behalf.

try this list of affordable housing. It's places that are government supported, yet not projects.

Refer them to Daniel Goldstein. For years he's insisted that he cares deeply about affordable housing and, now that he has an extra 3M on hand, I'm sure that he'd be more than happy to subsidize their rent.

Sounds like your neighbors need immediate help, so not sure if this will help, but there was a ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday for new affordable housing for seniors in Crown Heights. Here is link.

I'm sorry I don't, but I'll ask around for you.
