Argh, ok where am I?

I searched and I couldn't pinpoint a good thread for acceptable, non-realtor terminology for my area. I think we're all sick of this question, and feel free to link relevant threads instead of responding... But, I just put an ad on craigslist for my first ever roommate. I live on 4th ave at 18th st. I said "South Park Slope." I have no problem saying I live in Greenwood Heights if it's true, but some people argue with that, or some people are like, "huh? where?" and then I'm relating it to PS again. I just moved from 6th ave and 13th st. So yeah where am I?

You're in Brooklyn. Case closed.

Just tell them South Brooklyn.

But really, it depends who you're talking to. Saying 'between Park Slope and Sunset Park' works, but South Brooklyn seems fine for people who ask for sake of propriety without really caring one way or the other.

I'd say Greenwood Hts. Once you cross the freeway, you're not in the Slope anymore. Of course, 4th Ave doesnt really *feel* like Greenwood either... but I'd stick with it.

Not that it really matters, but here's the best I figure.

Since you previously mentioned that you're across from the Clean Rite Center, that'd put you on the west side of 4th Ave.

The folks at wikipedia put you just a block south of where Gowanus ends at 17th between Hamilton and 4th.

South Brooklyn?! Who said that... that's absurd.

Just say you are X number of blocks from whatever subway station and let people draw their own conclusions. If they ask, you can always explain you are on the border of several cool neighborhoods.

@ Jamzer -??? Seems like the roommate she's trying to find would care where the apartment is located, so I don't think its fair to imply anyone needs to "get a life" for discussing this in this case.

tyburg, isn't South Brooklyn everything south of the Navy Yard? (I think?)

Classic old skool term that goes way beyond when I got here in '99.

I seem to recall specific discussions somewhere that folks in Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Park Slope, Gowanus etc. going way back before the main Brooklyn real estate boom started (in the 90s or whatever) would sometimes refer to the whole area as just South Brooklyn.

Maybe even Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, too..kinda just guessing that the Navy Yard inlet divides North Brooklyn and South Brooklyn.

Anyone else hear that?

It appears to be just the area south of Atlantic Ave ending just before Sunset Park, and perhaps not as far east as Park Slope.

That's how I remember it. Also before the Red Hook projects were built that area was also considered South Brooklyn. My family still tells people that they are from South Brooklyn.

I live an avenue up from you and, trying to be accurate, put "Greenwood Heights" on a bunch of recent Craigslist postings, and got back several "Where is Greenwood Heights?" questions. So - I went back to what I did before which was "South Slope/Greenwood Heights."

Not that I care one way or the other, but I feel comfortable calling the area "south slope" or "south park slope" because that is what the city's own planners call it in their area redevelopment plans. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/southparkslope/index.shtml

Strange to call it South Brooklyn seeing as how about 85% of Brooklyn is south of that location.

Whatevs, I got my answer. 'Cept I'm bummed cause I posted my ad on craigslist at 4:30am yesterday and I only got responses this morning and nothing since probably because it was buried. Guess I gotta repost, but CL is so unforgiving about reposts.

Only one? How long of a post was it? When I did my CL ad last year I was real specific... Scratched the entire ad and went way less specific. I had a bunch of people respond and then I narrowed it down from there. On the flip side when I was reading other people's ads I found myself tuning out and clicking onto the next one after 4 or 5 sentences.

The City, Community Board 7, Google, etc. consider the boarders outlined in the wiki and the appropriate boundaries of GWH. But if yer nervous about location, just say "Greenwood Heights/South park Slope...7 blocks from historic Green-Wood Cemetery"

And leave it at that. At least no one said Sunset Park!

it's a Craigslist ad for an apartment... everyone knows that Craigslist only recognizes three neighborhoods in Brooklyn: Park Slope, Willamsburg, and Dumbo... then you add a compass direction to explain the actual location.

So you're in South Park Slope, or Far South Dumbo.... or South South Williamsburg.

Just like the Upper East Side extends from the 60th street all the way to the Bronx in Manhattan...

this is where i tell everyone i live now, because it's so mysterious. it's the san borondón of brooklyn -- its coordinates are constantly shifting, and while many claim to have seen it, almost no one can pinpoint it on a map. any day now it will be nothing more than a myth, seen only at dawn and sunset by unsuspecting travelers.

I should have added, this place is on 23rd St, btwn 4th/5th Aves. Dead center (N/S) in GWH.
