Hi, I live on 8th avenue and Union. Every day, throughout the day, my girlfriend and I hear someone or some thing screeching like a monkey. Can anyone help us get to the bottom of this?

What is the name of that bird that imitates other sounds?
Last year this time I thought I was hearing car alarm sirens.
Turned out to be a bird.

African Grey parrots that I've known have been amazing mimics. I knew one that could do the phone ring so well its owners ran to answer it every time. Maybe somebody has a parrot that watches animal planet :)

Also, have you ever heard cats in heat (or whatever it's called for cats)? They make some disturbing sounds.

Or could this be a monkey?
Nothing is impossible in the magical world of Park Slope.

Someone practices the violin in the back of the tall buildings on the corners of Union and 8th. Not much today.

I bet it's this: http://www.woot.com/blog/viewentry.aspx?id=2356 I have one and it emits the loudest monkey screech. It scares small children. Guaranteed hours of fun!

They make great gifts. It's universal. They annoy everybody.

No need? How about no possibility of confrontation...

    1) JO is banned from this message board...
    2) This is a Message Board not a bar room, living room, dark alley or high school locker room.
    3) Sticks and stones might break my bones, but nasty hate filled emails from JO, mod warnings, and a general hatred toward me on this message board... oh whatever

    .. oh whatever

Through the top most window facing Union, in the house on the NW corner, now shrouded for pointing, I used to see a monkey - 25-30 years ago.

Yes, I can confirm what Richard posted above.

Sometime in the 80s, the person who had the apartment in that corner building at 8th & Union - where the scaffolds are now - the apartment with the little side balcony, they had a monkey who'd sit on the railing.

I still think of that every time I pass that corner.

    Love it!
That monkey is part of Park Slope Folklore or Legend or whatever but not an "urban myth." That monkey really lived there and screeched.

    Hey everyone,

Thanks so much for your monkey input. Today I saw a guy walking with a parrot on his shoulder, he was on president and 8th. Can't imagine this bird could shriek as loud as what we hear, but it's awful suspicious.

Maybe this intersection is still some kind of wacky monkey habitat...
