Where to go for Bagels

I got hooked on Bagel World and La Bagel Delight in PS (I like Bagel World better). Where does a guy go for a good bagel around here?

I'm from the Midwest so, by default, I know NOTHING about true bagels.

That being said, I like Bergen Bagel.

How's that for a recommendation?

i'm from the south, but opinionated as all hell. and i like bergen bagels. not as much as i like absolute bagel on the uws, but who wants to schlep on the weekend?

(now, an absolute bagel plus the cream cheese from russ and daughters requires some pre-planning but is the ne plus ultra, if we're ready to talk ne plus ultra.)

Has anyone tried the place on Washington? I looked in one time but it didn't have that real bagel place feel for me. I think it's at Bergen or so.

Maybe NY blueberry bagels are, but Midwest blueberry bagels aren't! Midwest bagels are more chewy on the outside (less crusty), and they're a little lighter on the inside, so it works. So, if you're going to judge based on NY criteria, yeah, you'll find them horrible... BUT, if you enjoy it for what it is, they're great.

er, I like bberry bagels, so not in response to that. there's a bagel joint somewhere on washinton, toward atlantic. haven't been - wrong direction for me most mornings as I live btwn st. johns and sterling and walk to the B - but I think sje has said it's decent.

By all means enjoy it for what it is. But what it is isn't a bagel. :roll:

I guess that we'll have to agree to disagree - I don't think that there's enough of a divergence in either ingredients or method of preparation to classify it a new species...

I like the early morning weekend scene at Prospect Perk (Sterling/Flatbush) and the salt-o-the-earth owner who is always quick with a free bagel for the tots...good coffee, pastries and bagels...

When I was a student in Michigan in the late 70's I used to go to the Bagel Fragel, a fragel being a cinnamon raisin bagel deep-fried and coated in cinnamon sugar. I'm sure I'd be disgusted by them now, but at the time they were great.

:shock: Even I'm not sure what to make of that... although I'm sure that it would be warmly welcomed at the MN state fair if they put it on a stick... (you can find just about anything deep-fried on a stick at the MN state fair... pork chops, alligator, corndogs (not to be confused with pronto-pups, which are also available), cheese, candy bars...

Same thing, really, but sticklers like to point out that there's a difference in the breading. Corndogs have a corn meal batter, pronto-pups have just regular batter.

I've never tried it, but I would think that lutefisk is one of those things where either you love it or you hate it... so if you're the type to eat it in the first place, I doubt that you'll mind if it lingers... :?
