Anyone know how this works?

I heard that you can rent one from an existing owner since the wait list is endless.

you can't 'rent' one, this is what I know:

The list is miles long, and the only way to get a license is on the black market (not kidding) or partnering with somebody who already has a license, if they have the license you would have to be partners in the "company" and there's lots of legal stuff you'd have to look up and abide by.

Otherwise, you are talking about paying a huge sum to buy one illegally and if you get caught, well.. that's another mess. I will add that because you are probably starting a hip food venture like many of the new trucks you will bring more attention to yourself then say a Dominican that got an illegal license and sells out of Queens or whatever. So you're risk is high.

Like "Cab/Taxi" medallions it's very hard to get one and there are lots of shenanigans involved in getting one.

Supposedly most licenses are owned by a few people/companies who hire people to use them. It might be worth your while to go chat up some street vendors to find out if they work for someone who owns a bunch and get in touch with that person.

Last I heard, you can't even get on the list for one from the city. The list is so long they have locked it.
