Morning Puppy Training?

Hello Brooklyn,

I have recently gotten an awesome but a complete nutcase of a puppy (love the nut to death). I really want to get him on the right track right out of the gate but I can't find a puppy kindergarten that is in the morning. All of the classes I have found clash with my work schedule (I work from 3pm-11pm). I am just posting here to see if the other odd shifters have a puppy class they know about! Thanks in advance!

Did you try Monster Mutt on Warren Street? I heard good things about them although I have not used them. I do know they have weekends also.

Good luck and congrats on the new addition and pictures please :)

The only bad thing about weekends is that my schedule rotates so I only have weekends every 3rd month. I would have to hit it perfect. Mornings I have everyday so hopefully there are morning classes somewhere! Thanks for the heads up on the place I just looked it up! Here is a picture of the little monster...the only way I can...

Not sure of what kinds of classes she has going on these days, but Annie Angell might have something. I haven't done training with her, but attended her Good Dog (therapy dog) classes, and I think any puppy class she does would be good. She was great with dogs and the owners.

I think this is her business, My Two Dogs:

Go online- there's plenty of things you can just do yourself. Also, most vets will freely provide you with a basic puppeh training manual. I got 2- one from my regular vet and one from the ASPCA when I had her spayed last week.

It takes a lot of work, but it's worth it.

Congrats on the new baby! Very cute.

    so cute.

I agree with everyone on the "it takes lots of work, but worth it".

...any idea how big s/he will grow to? How big were its parents?

I'm guessing the OP wants a group class for socializing the puppy, which is very much worth it even if you can do basic training on your own. I'm sure some of the trainers out there will do individual sessions to fit different schedules, but I can imagine how hard it is to find a morning group class.

Once your pup has the shots your vet deems appropriate for the puppy to go to the parks, off-leash in the mornings at Prospect Park is a great spot for your dog to meet others. If you're worried about him running off, get a training leash (not a flexi). It's a super long leash (or you can tie rope or several leashes together) and let the dog drag it. Then if he starts to get too far from you, just yell in his direction and someone can just step on the leash to stop him.

Another trainer who might have group sessions is Vivian at Pumpkin Pups. Just google it and contact her if you're still looking.

In regards to group classes for socialization- I've never done one but have a friend that's taking a class. She says in order for the training to work, the puppies aren't really allowed to socialize- it distracts them.

Go to the morning off leash in Prospect park and let him have at it with other puppies his age. When they're that young, they usually stay close to the other dogs and especially mommy and daddy.

I can't express enough how important socialization is and how early it needs to start. I have a 6 month old and her little (and BIG) puppeh friends have been invaluable to me and her development.

    Subject: Morning Puppy Training

    Hi,
What a cute puppy!!! I'm new here and saw your post about needing puppy training. If you are still searching, I provide in home dog training. I'm a native Brooklynite (Carroll Gardens at Smith and 3rd). Anyway, I thought I'd reach out.
    Thanks,
    David
