Best brunch in Prospect Heights?

Hey all, just wondering where everyone brunches at ? I've tried Beast and Cornelius, and thought were pretty good. Any other recommendations?

You've tried my two favorites. The brunch at The Vanderbilt is pretty good, too. I've never been a fan of Tom's - nice service and decor, but substandard food.

we like gen (really CH ) and ortine, both on washington.

Chavellas has a very good brunch.

Taqueria de los Muertos has started doing brunch and I had a good meal when I went with an outstanding bloody mary.

It's been a long time now, but James had a solid brunch when I last went.

I like the brunches I've had a Cheryl's but my girlfriend isn't much of a fan.

James also has a great brunch, probably my favorite in the area. The Vanderbilt is hit and miss; some things are great (shrimp and grits) and some things are not (mushroom egg thing Mrs. C ordered a few months ago). Franny's is also open for brunch, but it's basically their normal menu at their normal prices. Tom's is great in a different way (I love the chilli cheese omelet with grits or the pork sausage omelet with grits) but they don't do booze, which may be a brunch deal-breaker for some people.

The Vanderbilt and James are both outstanding.

Tom's. It's the neighborhood institution, and the pancakes are outstanding (egg dishes are hit and miss, supposedly, but we've never tried them).

What is with this Tom thing. It is basically diner food and somewhat sterile at that. You can't eat the decor which is amusing. I guess it is for people who think Franny's is great. La Gamin was avoided by my clan for a bit but now the place seems to have a new chef and the food is much much better. Some of the stuff at AMorino is okay (SAT Sun brunch) but limited. And you can run into unnecessary attitude there. Thanks for asking.

Franny's IS great. I'd mention that they got 2 stars from the NYT, but I'm sure you'll just pooh pooh Bruni, anyway.

Cheryl's is excellent: good food, nice atmosphere, never too long a wait. The Spot on Grand and Prospect has a good line in unlimited (if not outstanding) mimosas if you like that sort of thing, and their food is good. Brunches at Chavella's are nowhere near as satisfying as their wonderful weekday / evening food, and they certainly don't encourage one to linger.

(oops, 2 of these are in Crown Heights, but they're not that far to go)

Franny's does Brunch???

The Usual will take standard diner fare like eggs and home fries and then put pastrami on top of it thereby making it the best brunch in the area.

They're open at brunch time on weekends, but they don't have a separate brunch menu. It's the same as the dinner menu, and the prices are the same.

piquant on flatbush off st. marks. been there twice now. their hollandaise sauce is wonderful if you're a fan of poached eggs. great bloody marys as well. and reasonably priced!

i second piquant - their brunch is very reasonably-priced and very good! the few times i've been there, it's been quite empty.

i'm also a fan of the vanderbilt. i happened to enjoy the "mushroom egg thing."

I'm partial to Cafe Shane on Washington (between St. Johns and Sterling). Not only do they have really good grits, they also have delicious egg dishes, pancakes, French toast, fresh fruit -- all very reasonably priced. Occasionally a short wait for brunch, but it's rarely more than a few minutes -- well worth it.

I second Taqueria de los Muertos - although dine-in can be a bit slow, it's great fresh food.

I also am not a fan of Tom's - I think it's more an institution for being so old but the food isn't anything special. Plus, who wants to wait in line when there are plenty of better places nearby?

The grits at Cafe Shane are gross. Their bacon is also skimmpy.

Chevella's is the best... go just for the sweet bread

The Vanderbilt is AMAZING!!! Every brunch dish I've had has been delish. I highly recommend getting a side of the thick-cut bacon, it will change your life.

What about 'The Spot' on Grand Ave. and Prospect Place?

Mediocre food at best, and free refills of really bad mimosas.

If you can get past that, it's a pretty good value.

Apricot scone, cappuccino and baked eggs at Amorina is a good one.
