Hi All - I searched this whole site and found a couple of threads that touch on this subject but it looks like none of them were in this forum. My girlfriend and I just moved into a new apartment and last night I ran into our neighbour who said that we "definitely want to install window guards on the fire escape window" as there have been a couple of break-ins over the last couple of years. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for companies they have used in the past? Thanks in advance!

Also if you could let me know any cost related information too, that would be great. I have never had to do this :/ Thanks.

I think in NYC it is illegal to put window bars on a fire escape window.

I'm talking about the fire department - approved window guards. They are safe for fire escapes.

I don't know, but you may want to also post this question on brownstoner.com

Here's a thread you probably already found in your search

I researched this and called a few places. Be prepared to spend a good chunk of changed on this. Only a few companies still install these, mostly locksmiths, and they will run you a few hundred bucks since they will need to be cut to size after measuring your windows since the accordian type is pretty much non-existant these days.

I was told by several locksmiths that part of the reason they aren't installed as often as they used to be is because the new construction cannot handle the weight and type of installation required for window guards. Shouldn't matter much because most new developments have other fire safety measures that don't require fire escapes.

Thanks. I have called a bunch of places and it's looking like I am going to spend between $325 and $450 which is completely worth it considering that it will protect me against getting my things stolen. I am going to make a decision on which one in the next day or so and will post results afterward. Thanks again.
