Tap water suddenly bad?

Hi, I live in the N Slope, and today when I got home around noon, my tap water suddenly tasted awful, like iodiney ocean water. It was the same from all taps, and it wasn't like this in the morning. Anyone have experience with this or know what might have caused it? I feel bad because I gave some to my daughter to drink before I noticed. I hope she doesn't get sick!

This usually happens when the city is doing work on the pipes... run the water for a while to help push the sediment through. I've never heard of anyone I know getting sick from it.

If you rent, check with your landlord to see if anyone was working on your pipes or plumbing or if the water had been shut off. Otherwise check with the water company. I drink tap water and I haven't noticed anything odd.

i would boil the water for like five minutes before drinking it for a couple of days and id ask the landlord if they had the water shut off or if its something to do with the city. You co uld call 311 and ask them if they are aware of any pipe work done in the area. Thats usually what happens when a water main is replaced or worked on.. also it can happen if there is a large fire somewhere near and the fire hydrants are run for a long time

Definitely check with your landlord. If they just turned on your heat, it could be related. Sometimes the one-way valve that connects the overflow from the heating system to the water system can become faulty and back up into the drinking water. If that happens, it can actually be toxic. This is rare though, and only typically happens in the type of systems for large buildings.

I'm in North PS, there was a little bit of something (grit) in my sink water. Too light to notice with out really looking. It's happened before, usually when the City does work on 4th/5th/6th ave or whatever. After checking and doing some calling it's always fallen back to be sediment. I'm in a small building though, if you are in an apartment complex, check with the management and confirm all is OK on your end.
