Please join us on October 26 when Professor Frank Zimring will discuss the decline in crime in New York City during the past 20 years. His presentation is part of the Vera Institute’s Neil A. Weiner Research Speaker Series.

Zimring is the William G. Simon Professor of Law and Wolfen Distinguished Scholar at University of California, Berkeley. He has written more than 100 scholarly articles and a dozen books on a range of topics, including crime, violence, youth justice, and capital punishment.

He is an advisor to the Campaign for Youth Justice, the California Attorney General’s Office, the American Society of Criminology’s National Policy Committee, and the National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies.

Alternatively, or better yet, in addition, see "Freakonomics", now playing at the Angelika theater. Eugene Jarecki's segment (on which I assisted) of that film posits an unusual explanation for the reduction in crime.

....as long as he's not one of those people who states "all the criminals moved to Newark", I'll probably like it.

I tend to get along with the people who state the cycle of violence has been broken. ....the sociologists vs psychologists.

The legalization of abortion resulted in fewer unwanted babies, and thus, 20-30 years later, fewer criminals.

But you should see the film... it's very entertaining.

And no, I do not profit from ticket sales or any other exploitation of the film.

abortion could explain some of the missing crime, so can the poor moving out of nyc. and the affluent moving in to nyc and more immigrants.
