And that includes Brooklyn, as well as Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, and bicycles are also illegal on all of Long Island. Under the law, even mere posession of a bicycle is illegal in New York City and Long Island, and of course operation of a bicycle is illegal. That is right, people, you can no longer ride a bicycle anywhere in New York City or on Long Island. Not on the street, not in the alley, and not on the sidewalk. Posession and/or operation of a bicycle in New York City/Long Island is punishable by up to 5 years on Rikers Island. Same goes for unicycles, tricycles, quadricycles, pedicabs, big wheels, roller skates, rollerblades, and scooters. In fact, it is even illegal to run, jog, or walk fast on a pedestrian pathway. The speed limit on all pedestrian areas is 2 miles per hour and it is radar monitored. Running, jogging, and fast/brisk walking is punishable by up to 1 year on Rikers Island. We know a lot of you are probably shocked about bicycles being banned on Long Island and want to know why, so here is the answer. Long Island is a private community, and with issues of stalking and people riding past victims' houses on bicycles, Nassau and Suffolk counties have decided that enough is enough and have banned all human driven vehicles from their communities.
