JOIN US on Saturday Nov. 6th at 10am to green and clean Crown Heights!

Nostrand Park and the Crow Hill Community Association (CHCA) are collaborating with residents, business owners, and neighbors to beautify Crown Heights. Continuing with their annual tradition, CHCA will be organizing a planting on Franklin Ave. and for the first time ever, Nostrand Park is organizing a planting and cleaning on Nostrand Ave.

RSVP here for the Nostrand cleaning. Email CHCA at [email hidden] to RSVP for the Franklin planting.

Bonus: On Nostrand Ave we will have cupcakes donated by Crown Heights owned BCakeNY, hot chocolate donated by Joey's Gourmet Lunchboxx (707 Nostrand Ave.), extra tools donated by Garvey's Hardware (583 Nostrand Ave.) and Friends of Brower Park, 175 daffodils donated by Crown Heights resident Thekla H., 200 hyacinths donated by Super Wings, and about 300 irises donated by Nostrand Park staff. (Though that still enough not enough to plant in every tree on the Ave.)

Also, Brooklynian poster whynot_31 will be constructing some tree guards made from wood donated by tsarina and painted by snowboardqueen. Not to mention all the other folks from Brooklynian and beyond who are going to come out.

This is a homegrown movement. Experience the renaissance!

    Todays facts:

    1. Approximately 25 people will plant 600 bulbs for the mere promise of cupcakes. (what will people do for brownies?)

    2. If anyone ever wonders why they do not have wood in their apartment: It is because Tsarina has it all. ....easy enough for 4 more tree guards.

    3. Snowboardqueen is supposed to paint them sometime this week. I hope she uses bright colors.

    1) Depends on the country. People in the Netherlands are surprisingly very well motivated for brownies. Until they eat them, of course.

    2) A recent glance at Craigslist would appear to confirm that it is also quite popular to stock a large assortment of available trees in one's apartment as well. Some will even deliver said trees.

    3) I would imagine that if she follows steps 1 and 2 above the tree guards may arrive patterned, not merely painted one color.

    One can hope, anyway. :lol:

    1. It is all about the butter.

    2. Is it 420 yet?

    3. Present employer does drug tests. Can I go back to college?

    My husband and I cleaned and planted on Franklin. I saw maybe 10 people. I think cupcakes could have improved that number.

    Glad to hear that people came out to support the Franklin clean up!

    The first ever Nostrand Avenue community cleanup was a huge success! Here's a video produced by 3 local high school students from First Take NYC (under the direction of the NYTimes reporter) who came out to report on the event:

    Here’ what we achieved:

    * 35 volunteers (planning and labor) [target was 30]

    * 99 volunteer hours (planning and labor) [target was 60]

    * 9 businesses engaged (promotions, donations) [target was 5]

    * 3 community group collaborations [target was 1]

    * 600+ flower bulbs planted [target was 175]

    * 6 blocks cleaned [target was 9]

    * 88 additional residents and business engaged (discussions about “Destination Nostrand”) [target was 60]

    * 1 local politician support [target was 2]

    * $171 in cash donated/pledged [target was $125]

    We have pictures and a full list of supporters on the blog: http://nostrandpark.com/2010/11/08/first-ever-nostrand-avenue-community-cleanup-huge-success-see-video/

    Yes! It is a great feeling to witness the progress. We've actually been posting pictures on the blog. Here is a pic from the latest round:

    Some of our bloggers also bought faux tree guards to protect the pits from dogs and pedestrians. We put more info on the blog, but if you are interested, our bloggers purchased them from Home Depot.
