I don't like this new layout

First off, I think that literally everything about this new layout is worse than the old. There is not one single improvement here… But if you want me to be specific, here are some of my complaints:

1. This new system does not tell you how many times a thread has been viewed. If I post something and nobody responds, then I’m still curious to know how many people read it.

2. I don’t like that the Forums page begins with the latest posts.

http://brooklynian.com/forum/

When I go to that page, I’m just looking for a list of sections. I don’t need to scroll down for the list - it’s quite annoying.

3. I don’t like that sections no longer tell me who started the thread (they only tell me who the latest poster to respond was). I’d rather be able to know that info without needing to click on each thread individually.

4. I can't preview a message before posting it.

I am liking the new setup but i even a stopped clock is right twice a day so id like to suggest that if possible the post view thing and who started the thread be brought back if possible.. there are times that both are useful.

One issue im having is that while typing in the reply box the cursor is a stroke or two off the letter im typing its behind the actual letter and the lone ends after the egde of the reply box. Im hoping that can be fixed

Hi Garth - sorry you are having trouble with the "new" site.

    1. This new system does not tell you how many times a thread has been viewed. If I post something and nobody responds, then I’m still curious to know how many people read it.

We removed it after protests that it was distracting and that a lot of people didn't find it useful. I put it back on the page in a new location that may be less controversial. How does it look now?

    2. I don’t like that the Forums page begins with the latest posts.

You don't have to be annoyed. If you go to the HOME dropdown and choose "Forum Index", you can view the page WITHOUT the latest topics. You can also just bookmark this link: http://brooklynian.com/forum/?forum-index=1

I'm also thinking about adding a "hide latest activity" link to the top of the page - would that be useful?

    3. I don’t like that sections no longer tell me who started the thread (they only tell me who the latest poster to respond was). I’d rather be able to know that info without needing to click on each thread individually.

Yes, I was also annoyed by that. I added the thread starter and time to the forum view pages. Is this what you were looking for?

    4. I can't preview a message before posting it.

There is no good "out of the box" way to do this. Until somebody gets around to creating a post preview function, you can simply submit your post and then click EDIT if there's something you don't like about it.

Weird. The reply box has a lot of issues that need to be fixed, but I haven't heard this one before. What browser are you working with? Safari, firefox, IE, other? PC or Mac?

I like the new setup, but in safari, the cut and paste feature remains weird.

...you can't paste stuff in the right section.

    1. This one is completely fixed now, as far as I‘m concerned. I’m perfectly happy with it. Thank you!

    2. Yes, I’d definitely like it if you could add a little "hide latest activity" link to the top…. Now the link you just provided could be useful for some people who tend to keep "favorite" links, but personally I prefer to just click links once I‘m on a site. Is there another link from other sections to get there?

    3. Much better! I’m perfectly happy with it now. Thank you!

    4. Fair enough. I understand.

    ?

And I really do appreciate your super-polite response, and the actions you’ve already taken to work on my complaints. Now I’m almost feeling a bit guilty if my complaints came across as rude to the webmaster… Anyway, I look forward to continuing to read and post on these boards. Thanks again!

I am not so happy with it either. I am having problems with the read and blue fonts. They are too light. The writing is not as eye catching and it seems more difficult to focus. Sorry folks.

"Hide latest activity" is in full effect - I added the link last night. check the top of the offending "latest activity" section (upper right hand corner, it says "hide latest activity" or something like that)

@StoopLady, are you referring to the usernames, joined date, post count, etc? We can definitely fix that. @Jeffrey is the web style guru, so I defer to him, but we can pick colors that provide better contrast.

I read the forum using the "posts since last visit" feature. Since the update, there are invariably 13 pages of new activity everytime, instead of the usual 1-4 or so pages. Is it possible to get more posts on a single page? Clicking through 13 pages is daunting. thanks

My eyesight is bad on top of having a small laptop screen, but I'm happy with the size and colors on the usernames, joined date, post count, etc... just my 2 cents

Are you talking about http://brooklynian.com/forum/view/new-posts ? I bumped up the posts-per-page to 25, which is the same as it was on the old site, I think. However, there must be something wrong, because I only have 3 pages of Posts Since Last Visit. If you click "Update All Topics" it will clear out the queue of unvisited posts, and you can start fresh.

Thanks dailyheights. I tried that and I'll see how it works out going forward. So far so good.

Good. I still need to add back in the auto-quote function, but for now, you can copy and paste into the quote brackets.
