Holiday Tipping

So I live in a small building (8 units, total) and have a super who lives in. I've never had him in my apartment itself, but he takes out the trash, keeps the heat on, cleans the hallways, etc. I rarely see him, but I know my apartment bulding isn't a mess so he must be doing his job.

I don't have a dog, kids, etc. so there are no dog walkers, nannies, etc. and I clean my own apartment. Meaning, I've never done holiday tipping before.

If something bursts in my apartment (pipe, etc.) or need repairs, the landlord hires a contractor to make the repairs - meaning the super doesn't do that.

BUT I was talking to some coworkers and they were talking about tipping their supers/doormen - thing is, they live in large-scale buildings with much more hands-on types of people.

Am I to tip him? Do you tip?

I was thinking maybe just a card and cookies?

Thanks!

There have been a few discussions on this, but it seems according to what you are saying, that a nice card and cookies is more then enough.

Thanks - for some reason my search earlier only showed things about car services.

I would have to disagree with Mamacita. The holiday tip is part of their compensation - the union rate is about $18 per hour, so they're not exactly overpaid. I would tip him, in cash, that's what he needs and is expecting. If you google "super holiday tip" you'll find plenty of article on how much to tip.

As a native-born from natives, $75.00 is the current going rate for a super. You're not just paying for what has been done but what might need to be done. Also he/she prob. has a copy of your key so keep them on your good side. cookies and other home-made goods will be thrown out just in case you are a psycho trying to poison them or live and cook in filth.

Well, there is some correlation you know. Those three wise men have often been interpreted to be Muslims visiting the baby Jesus. What were they following? They were following a star. What's the symbol associated with Islam? A quarter moon and a star. What are the three wise men always pictured as? Aren't they always riding camels? What did they give the baby Jesus in homage of his birth? Frankincense and Myrrh... I've never seen Jews nor Christians burn incense(-- unless they were smoking a blunt), have you? Think about it people. Asalaam Alaikum!!!

You've never seen Christians burn incense? Catholics do. All Orthodox (Greek, Ukranian, etc.) Christian religions do. And those are the "original" Christian sects.

I remember having to leave a funeral as a little kid because they swung the incense in my face and I couldn't stop coughing.

MHA, that's a nice fantasy, but Islam wasn't around yet.

But, you may be on to something with the star. Maybe they were Bolsheviks, or representatives of the Heineken brewery?
