edited November -1 in Crown Heights/Prospect Lefferts Gardens
Around 12 noon setting in my car on Rogers Ave near Sterling Pl when I heard a series of gun shots - 12 or so. Minutes later the entire area was saturated with police, fire, ambulance and people. I heard that a woman was shot near the school on Park Place between Rogers and Nostrand Ave.

Anyone heard any further info?

    From NY1.com:

    June 05, 2006

A Brooklyn woman is recovering Monday afternoon after being shot while trying to break up a fight involving her adult son in Crown Heights.

Police say a 22-year-old man was fighting with several men when his 52-year-old mother stepped in.

She was shot once in the back and rushed to hospital. Her condition is described as stable.

The men took fled following the shooting. Police are still looking for them after witnesses unsuccessfully tried to chase them down.

Okay, that's just about as low as you can get, shooting someone's mama in the back. Geez.

I live in the next block over on Park Place. The whole block is up and arms. Tomorrow we're having a block meeting with the 77th Pct. Community Affairs officer Ratton and the head of the 77th Pct. Council in attendance.

There is a pubic elementary school on the block where it happened, which of course was in session when the whole incident happened. The block is also the site of numerous 8 family walk-up buildings filled with low-income families.

In short, the police need to really stake this block out.

Ironically the head of the Transportation Committee on the Community Board owns a building on the block. The block has had street lights out for years and it is the Dept of Transporation that has to replace them!

The WB Morning news covered this story this morning. The woman involved is a very active member in the community. Her son got arrested later for trying to cross the police barriers and resisting arrest.

Now that we have a member of the State Assembly living on our block, I hope that the police will actually show up and take the residents concerns seriously and not just give us the "We're doing everything we can" spiel.

The woman who was shot is the sister/aunt of a family in my building. I got an update today, and she had surgery, is busted up pretty badly but is going to be ok.

    So, so, so sad.
