Hi guys,

I'm moving to Crown Heights in a week or so, and I was wondering if I could get some recommendations on good gyms in the area. Yelp only really has reviews for the YMCA.

I'll be located just off Atlantic Ave, and I'm willing to travel a bit.

Thanks in advance!

I'd also give a thumbs up to Body Reserve, if you are willing to go to North Slope. It's no frills, but they have all you need for a decent price, plus the group classes are great.

The Y is supposed to be nice, haven't checked it out myself. I go to the Crunch on Flatbush between Prospect and Park, it's a hike from CH but also a nice warm up / cool down run from the gym.

I second crunch. their classes are on point! if you get the passport membership you can visit any of their locations throughout the city. I frequent the Park Slope and Ft Greene locations.

There's one going up on Nostrand Ave and Bergen or Dean. Depending om hrs and price, it might be the 5th gym I join.

St John's Rec is cheap $75.00 a year & surprising clean and maintained for that price. They are a a basic gym, but have a nice heated pool and offer a few fitness classes during the week also.

Hey Snowboardqueen where'd you hear about the new gym? Any other details? As much as I love my warm up / cool down hike to Crunch, I could also do without it.

    I love + miss the Y

If you don't need classes everything else is overpriced

You could also take the B25 on a few minutes bus ride on Fulton Street to the Planet Fitness near Flatbush avenue -- $10 a month!

I used the YMCA on Bedford for a while and liked it a lot - although as a cardio-user I got annoyed having to wait from time-to-time. But as a teacher I got in for $33 per month, so I couldn't complain too much.

The vacant theater on Nostrand between Park Place and Sterling Place some have suggested would make a great location for a gym. It's now on the market and is the largest space available on Nostrand. Over 5,000 square feet on one floor.

If not a gym, any other ideas?

Good equipment, new facility and inexpensive. During the winter I enjoyed using the stationary bikes and watching people the dentist work across the street.

There is a new gym on St. Mark's near the corner of Nostrand. Named "Nostrand Gym" or something like that. We just quickly stopped in, so we can give you more later.

If your are interested in lap swimming I wouldn't join the YMCA. I'm currently a member at the Bed-Stuy YMCA but the pool is closed for emergency repairs until 5/2/11. The price is right but the service and facilities has been following a downward spiral as of late.

It used to be a four lane pool which always worked out well as two lanes could be devoted to swim lessons, water aerobics, free swim etc. leaving the other two lanes divided amongst fast and slow lap swimmers but three weeks ago one of lane line dividers broke and they have decided to divide the pool into thirds giving two-thirds of the pool over to lessons, class etc. and cramming all the fast and slow lap swimmers into the remaining one-third share which means no one can swim fast if you have more than two slow lap swimmers in the pool at a time, ie all the time.

The only toilet in the Men's locker room was out-of-order for a week as well as the swim suit dryer, the smell of moldy wet suits hanging in lockers has become less than delightful. The pool's temperature is supposed to be kept at 83 to 84 degrees but at least once a week someone forgets to check it and it climbs to over 91 degrees which makes a rigorous mile long lap swim work out about as pleasant as a marathon run in a heat wave. I have brought these complaints up to management which has yielded no resolution.

Here's an inside shot of the gym:

And apparently, there's a ballroom dance place opening on Nostrand at the corner of Dean:

Thanks for the update, NostrandPark! This gym is definitely closer to us, though we're still considering some of the other ones that were brought up in the thread. You didn't by any chance get a peek at the locker rooms at the St. Marks gym, did you?

Yes - the changing room, is still a work in progress. Once it is done, it will be a small space.

They are also going to update their storefront windows and doors, which when we dropped by, were looking pretty shabby.

It would probably be more accurate to call this place a fitness center. It has the basic staple equipment - weights and machines. It has a personal training room (the owners are licensed personal trainers). And then a couple of small nooks (including the changing room) that they are still building out.

The NEW GUM on St. Marks Ave. right off of Nostrand Ave, heading East, lowered their prices.

Initially I was told $40 a month and as I belong to 4 other gyms - one the Rec Ctr for $75.00 a yr and maybe 5 -7 blocks the most (less than a min mike ride)- there was no incentive.

NOW, i just saw a sign that says $25.00 down and $25.00 a month! i did not go in for further details.., but at $25.00 a month, depending on the hrs., I mat join!
