Top Five Tips for New Prospect Heights Residents?

...Because we all love a great list, right?

Greetings all, I am moving to PH and wondered:

What are your top five tips for anyone coming into the neighborhood?

Please include food, night life, you know, practical things. I'm not unfamiliar with being a New Yorker, but this is my first foray into BKLYN.

1. Don't view porn at the library to the degree that you will not yield the computer to the next user once your time has expired.

2. Don't punch people who do the above.

5 tips

1.Know where the happy hours and food specials are in the area. Places have drinks for 3 bucks and cheap food that is a good option for entertaining yourself and others.

2.Mark your calender for 1st Saturdays. If you like mobs go out if you don't stay in.Mark your calender for Carib Day parade, same as above.

3.Locate all the grocery stores and bakery outlets

4.don't move until the new Chavela's is open

5. sell your car or get a lot spot for 150-200 bucks a month because the parking enforcement is pretty tight,

* bonus tip. fear not any train outage or schedule change because the walks from 2,3,4,5,B,Q are pretty easy, if you are fit the walk from a C stop on Fulton is not too bad

I think catwalker has got it, though I'd replace #4 with "dont walk around at night watching an indie flick on the 1080P screen of your fancy smart phone"

What block are you moving to, you might not even be moving to PH (Realtors/landlords lie.)

You're from out of state, and more info would be useful to others here in order to give you specific tips.

Come on, dude, there's no such thing - you know that the graphics processing horsepower necessary to drive 1080P video would just murder a phone battery.

Otherwise I'd have one.

My advice is to get to know your neighbors. For me, PHeights is about all the people that live here.

I'm with what Raulism said. If you have a stoop, sit on it and greet your neighbors. If you don't have a stoop, try to do so anyway when you're out near your home. One of the top reasons we loved this neighborhood when we moved into it 21 years ago was that there were so many long-time residents and we really got to know our neighbors. As old-timers have moved and passed away, and the neighborhood has gentrified there has been a little less of this neighborliness. It would be nice to be conscious of this and help it grow....so if you're walking by Prospect Place just below Vanderbilt Ave and see me or my kids or husband outside hanging out, say hello!

How is the cab situation?

You can sometimes hail a cab on busier streets, like Flatbush, but you should have at least one car service number on speed dial - Arecibo is a favorite of mine, but there are a few good ones in the area. Mayor Mike was talking about changing the laws and allowing car services to pick up fares from the street (as opposed to only responding to calls) in the outer boroughs, but I don't know how that's progressed. You can still try to flag one down, just don't be offended if they don't stop.

The plan to allow hailing of livery cabs has been abandoned in favor of issuing special medallions for new yellow cabs that will only be able to pick up fares in outer boroughs.

I wonder how they will enforce that. Also wonder whether the cabbies will be allowed to pick up fares coming back from the city. But I suppose it is better than nothing.

Yeah, but even people who've been in the hood for a while debate the boundaries. A friend of mine recently said that she thought Franklin was Prospect Heights. I disagreed and said that I believed it was Crown Heights, but she's been here at least a decade longer than I have.

Pfft. Franklin is clearly in ProCro.
