Muffler Stolen?!

Well this is odd.

Moved the car for alt side parking yesterday morning and left it where we typically do, down the block from the apartment. Went to move it last night again for alt side parking (the pain in the ass of alt side parking is worth its own thread) and started the car...VROOM it starts up and sounds like a FatBoy! So we hop under the car to check out what was going on, only to find, much to our surprise that an ENTIRE SECTION of the exhaust pipe was missing. That's right folks, taken-missing-gone. Clean cut, little metal shavings left behind on the ground.

Has this happened to you?

This is the new rage. Your exhaust was stolen for the catalytic converter. It can either be salvaged for about $50 or resold for a $100 or so. Problem is...it will probably cost you $400 or so to replace it with a new one and have the exhaust fixed. I can't figure out how no one spots people under the car doing this but these slime balls never seem to get caught.

Someone stole one of my wiper blades a while ago. Just the passenger side one, and you know, not the whole wiper, which was fine, just the rubber thing. Were they just being a PITA? Maybe one of theirs was worn out and mine was the same size? WTF is with people?

We had our side mirrors removed a while back (they're nice, electric ones w/ a light). They were so cleanly taken off, they (respectfully) didn't cut the wires!

Daver has since had the new ones bolted on so they don't come off.

    Assholes.

One of my Dad's work colleagues had the drive shaft stolen from her car in the office parking lot. This was about thirty years ago in Australia though. She came out from her day at work, started the car, put it in gear and nothing happened. Eventually she called the auto club, they took a look and told her the bad news.

update: took the car into the shop and realized..they didn't just take a section of the pipe..in fact, they removed our ENTIRE exhaust system. WTH? $2400 estimate. People are seriously messed up.

they took both converters, and our co2 filters. much higher estimate than $400..I wish it were only that much....

What kind of car is it?

If you've got a few years left on your inspection, you can replace the cats with straight pipes. Could give you a few extra ponies, too :)

Sorry for your loss. I live on Long Island and there's hardly a week that doesn't go by that there isn't a report of this in the police blotter.

Ah, see, the 4Runner just makes it too easy giving them plenty of space to work underneath with no jack.

Maybe you should consider having it lowered? :)
