Rape at 5th and 16/18th-ish

edited November -1 in Greenwood Heights and Sunset Park

If anyone was curious why there was the police unit parked across from Eagle Provisions all day today and increased patrols tonight - apparently a girl got raped last night leaving a bar in the area. I feel like the police should, I dunno, let people know what happened...despite walking by the police van and its officers hanging out outside as a solo female multiple times today/tonight, I only found out what happened because I was in a business when the police came in to talk to the owner.

So please - be careful all. My heart goes out to the victim. Wonder if it is the same guy who attempted something on 16th earlier this year: http://www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/34/17/dtg_rapeattempt_2011_4_29_bk.html

I have had a few "close calls" in the park lately. I have been followed and have been flashed several times while trying to get some extra exercise in the park. I have noticed that all of 5th ave by the cemetery, (through the 20's) all of 6th avenue by the cemetery, and all inside the north end of Sunset Park, seem to be very desolate at night. I stopped aerobic walking in those areas. Careful ladies!!!

We don't have cross posting abilities right now, so unless anyone objects, I'll GLOBAL this thread. I'd like to let anyone reading the PS or Windsor Terrace areas know to stay alert.

Here is a drawing of a suspect they are looking for. They are linking him to the 16th Street attack also

Terrible and very frightening. My heart goes out to these victims.

    Here is more from NY1:

We should all watch out for each other. SPS/Greenwood is known as a safe neighborhood and we should try to keep it that way. The police clearly have a lot of information and hopefully they will catch this guy soon.

In the meantime, consider some basic safety tips I learned many years ago when I lived in a particularly dodgy neighborhood. Be vigilant when walking alone, especially at night. If you think someone is following you, turn around and face them. Do not walk to your home - if you can, walk towards an open business or another safe place. Stay on well-lit and populated streets. Above all, trust your instincts. If you sense a situation or a person is threatening, err on the side of caution and don't second-guess yourself.

The 72nd police precinct is on 4th Avenue and 29th Street.

    Be safe everyone!

Last night the police were going door-to-door handing out a wanted poster of a rapist who attacked a woman on 27th Street between 4th and 5th Ave on June 4. The description sounds the same as the one in the first link, and they also had a security cam picture of him at the counter in the Dunkin Donuts (Gothamist article here, with the picture we were shown. I can't find any news about the June 4th case online yet.)

Channel 5 says a suspect is in custody and might be confessing. I hate these teasers at the start of every newscast, so annoying!!

Suspect has reportedly turned himself in, but is claiming he is not guilty.

I can't imagine they would place him under arrest if he was innocent, but I also can't imagine he would just turn himself in and plead innocence.

All I can say is that I hope that they got him, I hope that he is the one behind all of these horrific attacks, and I hope that he goes to jail for a very, very long time for doing what he did to those poor innocent women, especially the one whom he truly victimized. My heart is with her.

Just a reminder - this suspect was only identified by one of the victims so it is quite possible that there is another rapist out there. Please, please be careful.

Neergaard sells pepper spray behind the pharmacy counter for $10. Just bought a bottle today.

Also F***ed in Park Slope has a post regarding what's been going on: http://www.fuckedinparkslope.com/home/cops-allegedly-refused-stoop-surveillance-tape-in-park-slope.html

The suspect claims he's innocent (http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/brooklyn/klyn_rape_suspect_arraigned_on_his_lK7RsTdMXlP9t1A2EjVLpO)

Either way, I'd still follow Stacey's advice. Be careful out there ladies.

    @lostingreenwoodhts,

Can you let the rest of us know what the Community Meeting this coming Monday (JUNE 13) says about this? Or if anyone goes, can you report back?

One of the flyers posted in the neighborhood says one of the rapes occurred on 17th St. Does anyone know where (between what avenues?) I live on that street, so I'm a little unnerved.
