My office is on St. Johns and Troy. Anything east of Utica going all the way down Eastern Pkwy. is basically a big trouble zone. This is nothing new. Unfortunately.

...basically, the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center was able to convince the Department of Justice and other funding sources that the square area defined by Albany Ave, Atlantic Ave, Eastern Parkway and Utica Ave was one of the more violent areas in the city.

...and that they would like funding to run a program that may be able to help turn the situation around.

Does anyone know what happened on Brooklyn Ave around Bergen St? Saw a group of people and some cops.??

After the attending the vigil, why not stop by Imani Garden at Schenectady and Dean and engage some local folks in a more positive experience. We have 50 chickens, 800 gallons of water stored from the roof of our neighbor Our Lady of Charity RC Church, four planting beds and a lovely willow tree that provides a beautifully shading haven from the city grit.

At the new Imani II on the corner we've got 8 more planting beds, compost bins that include all of the coffee grounds from Breukelen Coffee shop - yes, the one on Franklin Avenue - and slots of weeds that would really love to become compost.

I went to see an apartment in that vicinity when I was first moving to the city, and the black landlord/real estate fellow said he wouldn't rent to me due to my safety. He said nicely, "You don't want to move out here. Why are you even out here?" lol... I remember feeling not so welcome.
