Does anyone know if the city provides tree pit guards and if so how does one go about getting them

If I remember correctly, the DOT doesn't allow for tree pit guards because they are a trip hazard. The standard is for Belgian block around the treee, laid flush to the sidewalk.

Judging by the number & variety of guards you see around the city, they don't enforce this rule very often.

You can apply for them (though it needs to be your whole block) via the Borough President's office.

Also, Citizens Committee of NYC runs DIY workshops for folks to build their own.

I signed a petition about a year ago for my block (23rd street) but I have not heard anything since.

Any such guard has to be 16" high at the minimum to be legal in NYC. Below that it is a trip hazard and you can be sued!!!

A little off-topic, but Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership is installing new tree guards this week.

I wish all streets could have artist-designed tree guards!
