I recently moved to the neighborhood. Everyone I know rants and raves about Sparkey's. Umm, yeah. Sparkey's is closed. Any other suggestions of good bars in the area?

This place would be cool if it wasn't packed with annoying frat boys:

I've heard it's a good place. But I don't think I can handle frat boys. Do they have cheap drinks? I went to Frankie's 457 for dinner recently and was shocked at how pricey the drinks were. wtf?

Gowanus Yacht Club is anthing but frat boys- they don't live in these parts. it's every hipster in brooklyn who descends up the bar. beers are cheap however as are the hot dogs.
you have to be in the mood but zombie hut can be fun too.

Maybe, but that's not what it seemed like the one time I was there (a few months ago). Aspiring to be hipsters maybe, but the crowd really seemed more collegiate (or just-graduated frat boys/sorority girls).

I really enjoy the Mini Bar and think the prices are reasonable. There's no pretentious attitude and the staff will hang out with you..

Abeline is new on Court street and a bit too hipsterish but kinda has a nice atmosphere..

and I like Brooklyn Social Club on Smith street but it can get crowded.. they make nice drinks

here's my choices, although not sure of the exact locations:

Hanks - atlantic and 3rd ave
    - 2nd best dive in the world, and decent/awful music on weekends

    Monterros - atlantic and Hicks
    - best dive bar in the world

Zombie Hut - smith and Sacket(?)
    -can be packed, and hipsterized

Brooklyn Tavern - bergen(?) and Hoyt
    - cool, old place

    Abilenes - on court and 2nd (?)
    - cool little joint, not too crowded

    Boat - smith and bergen?
    - best jukebox in the area, but can be crowded and filled with smokey hipsters

    Trout - pacific and smith
    - outdoor spot

Vegas on Smith Street between Bergen and Dean - includes Erotic Photo-Touch game for only a quarter a play!

The Brooklyn Inn on Hoyt and Bergen is a beautiful old bar and the crowd is usually pretty cool. There is a pool table in the back room and usually lots of smokers out front.
I also like Abeline and Brooklyn Social.

What about Brazen Head? Good selection of taps. Mellow crowds on the right nights. On Atlantic about a block before Court.

Abilene, because it isn't trying too hard.
although some nights it feels quite young.

boat. best bar. you don't have to be a hipster. bartenders will treat you with kindness and a healthy pour. jukebox is super swell, but if you're new, you can just grab a seat at the bar (if it's available) or just stand around, and i tell you what. an interesting person will undoubtedly talk to you. you don't have to anwer. bring a book if you want. just don't be antisocial. i advise a game of connect four or Uno. does that girl still make those wax animals?
