While driving from the direction of GAP toward Atlantic, white Toyota Camry hit pedestrian, then hit bell shaped bollard on median, making it flip on side.

    Scary stuff.

The Mrs., the dog and I were on Park Pl when the crash occurred.

Despite being among the first on the scene, I still can't figure out where the pedestrian was when struck.

    Pedestrian: Seriously injured.

Driver: Perhaps not seriously injured, to be determined by hospital. Air bags deployed, seat belt was on.

And several people including Whynot were helpful. Many voyeurs gathered. Then ambulances, FDNY arrived. They were very helpful. Both pedestrian and driver alive when ambulances left.

according to a witness, a car heading toward GAP on vanderbilt hit the pedestrian and kept going. the white toyota was in the opposite lane, heading toward atlantic, and swerved at the last minute to avoid hitting the other car and the downed pedestrian, and crashed in the process.

    ^^ this makes sense ^^

aha, the pedestrian was struck by a hit and run!

This part of the puzzle changes my version of the the story completely:

While driving from the direction of GAP toward Atlantic, white Toyota Camry hit pedestrian witnessed an accident that involved a pedestrian. The Camry then hit bell shaped bollard on median, making it flip on side.

Despite being among the first on the scene, I still can't could not figure out where the pedestrian was when struck because I did not know about the hit and run driver

When I arrived, seconds after impact, the pedestrian was lying in the GAP bound lane.

this intersection seems to be a pretty dangerous one even with the pedestrian islands. I think this is the fourth or fifth accident there in the last couple of years, and those are just the ones I've walked by.

Cars still drive fast, and pedestrians and bikes still go against the Red in all directions. I'm surprised there aren't more accidents like this.

I've always thought that the city would be better off changing light timing to regulate speed. Because the lights tend to be sequenced on Vandy, the reduction from two lanes to one means that folks tend to speed anyway. The pedestrian island simply attracts more people who want to walk out into the middle of the street while traffic is moving knowing that there is a "safe" area in the middle of traffic.

Car going S/B hits pedestrian, breaking his leg.

Car going N/B sees the accident and attempts to pull over to help but ends up mistaking the gas pedal for brake pedal. Hits the bell shaped barrier and flips the car over. Minor injuries.

    Crazy set of circumstances.

    Thanks.

Was the car going s/b that hit the pedestrian located?

Anti-bike nuts please note: this accident was all about a hit-and-run motorist. These incidents happen all of the time. It's kind of like "dog bites man". Nobody notices. The "man bites dog" story is an accident involving a bike and a pedestrian. Hence the big coverage and outcry when they do happen.

Another hit-and-run on the same day at Bedford Ave and Sterling Place. Just another day in the neighborhood. Where's the outrage?

not sure what your point is, capt. yes, hit-and-runs are outrageous. but if nobody sees it, or catches the license plate, there's not much to do about it. unlike the debate over bike safety, there aren't two sides here. everyone is pretty much against hit-and-runs.
