St. Theresa's, 1947 vs 2011

Found this old photo of St. Theresa's church from 1947 and thought it would be fun to try to re-take the same photo today:

You can trace the line of the tracks in the new photo. They were removed, but the hole wasn't filled in properly, so they are being exposed more as the buses pound down the asphalt.

Based on a recent conversation with a parishioner holding a fund raiser to do basic maintenance, the diocese has effectively left the St T congregation to fend for itself.

Given that:

1.  The diocese sold off the church on Rogers,

2.  Recently puts lots of $ into the one on Pacific and then deemed it a Cathedral, and 

3.  Keeps threatening to close the school and already sold off most of the grounds to become a Court Officer's Academy

4.   I know of no landmarking in place.

--->  it would not surprise me if St Theresa's was closed in 2016 and then demolished.

How do you get from elevating the church to cathedral status to selling off and demolishing? Usually when the church closes down an active ministry, they send parishioners to the next closest facility. I think that St. Theresa's is the closest (or at least equidistant to St. George which is on Brooklyn Ave) for the parishioners from the Rogers Ave church. I'd think they would do what they did in Bed-Stuy and consolidate the two parishes

As a result of the reno, the one on Pacific now has central air. I think the St T people will defect to Pacific on their own.

St T will slowly fall apart because it can't compete.

I hope it does not come to that; the church is beautiful and it would be a shame.

Pacific is much further away, especially for families coming from the south side of EP and if you're taking the bus on Rogers you're walking from Bedford to Underhill.

Turns out after a little digging that St. Ignatius (on Rogers) merged with another church on Nostrand and Lincoln. But again if you're looking to move north, St. Theresa is definitely the closest.

I wonder if the church wouldn't develop the property itself (as they did with the Senior's Housing) instead of selling it. There would seem to be a market for it, and at the price indicated here, I can't imagine that there isn't demand for this.

Section 8 housing for seniors (Section 202 housing) is more difficult to finance than other types.
