Mosquitos??

Has anyone else been experiencing an increase of mosquitos in your home? I've killed at least one almost every day for the past couple of weeks and I'm in a fourth floor walk-up!

Recently on CBS2 I saw a report about people in Manhattan having the same problem from sewer dwelling mosquitos that come up into apartments via cracks in the walls and other meanse.

It's strange to see such a high population of them so late in the year. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

Sewers are the perfect breeding ground. Wet, very warm and certainly nutrient rich. I'd even say the boiler warm is one as well.

The ones that are still around will naturally seek any opportunity for warmer shelter inside instead of buzzing around outside.

Along those lines folks should check all window air conditioning units. More often than not they retain a pool of stagnant water inside (accumulated via condensation over prior months in use) which provides an undisturbed breeding ground and shelter even well into the colder weather season outside. In most cases it's an easy path right through the vent into the nice and warm apartment or home with plenty of opportunity for feeding, especially at night.

Go remove any window a.c. units that may still be in place. If water comes out when tilted that would be a good indication of why you've had issues.

Yes! It was really just unbearable like 2-3 weeks ago. And these don't seem like your run-of-the-mill mosquitoes either: they only attack at night, and are extremely stealthy -- very good at hiding when discovered. Seems to have gotten better since then, but only after a night where we killed 3-4 mosquitoes at once. But it was awful for a while. Look around for standing water -- buckets, empty flower pots, anything. We got rid of ours on a hunch, and it seems to have improved things. Good luck!

Thank you! I just removed mine today on a whim and you're most likely right, they might have been accumulating inside. I didn't notice any water coming from the exit spout when I tilted it to put it in the closet however, though strangely I saw another mosquito not too long thereafter and hadn't seen any in about a week. I hope this brings the end to the nuisance. -Y

me i want to get rid of those lousy plants that require tons of water. i suspect they are hiding in them.

Yes, I've noticed them in my apartment as well. And this is the only time I've ever dealt with mosquitoes in November.

I thought the last one died at the end of October, but another one got me last night. I blame them on my neighboring landlord who allows his building's roof to flood with water year round. I had hoped the storm would have finally killed the little bastards, but all the water probably didn't freeze.

Are these Super mosquitoes of some kind? What the hell? I have also noticed that they are insanely stealthy. I only notice them because of the prick on my skin followed by them flying away. I hear no buzzing. Are they evolving?
