Last relic of the old 5th Ave....

We took a look at this building in 1959 a couple Thursdays ago, back when it was home to a mattress shop. It's nice to see that the owner, Chiu-Kun Wu, realized that he could make a lot more money by fixing up the decrepit building than by letting it slowly rot.

The rehab is very good news. the building has been an eye sore for a long time.

It already has a X marked on it. So it is set for demo probably. No amount of gutting alone can make a structurally unsound building ready for a simple prep-and-rent situation. They will probably keep a few walls intact in order to pass a few building codes blah blah stuff, but that building will be a reconstruction from the ground up.

How much do you bet that it will gain a few floors in the process. Lots of money to be made on that block of real estate.

All well and good, but when are they going to dynamite that pit next to The Met on 7th Avenue and 2nd Street? There must be some time limit on how long you can leave a scaffold up and do no actual work...
