Trap-Neuter-Return Project Scheduled for Next Week in CH - Can You Help?

If anyone would be able to help with a TNR (trap-neuter-return) project in Crown Heights next week please PM me with your e-mail address. We have neuter appointments for 40 feral cats in a very feral cat dense area. We have a lot of different needs so there will be something for everyone's comfort level. No experience necessary. Thanks in advance for your help!

Indeed — please consider keeping all kitties inside not only those evenings but all the time. They should never be outdoors.

why should I keep my cat locked inside the house all day?

well just for starters, so it cant get in contact with cats that have leukemia or feline AIDS. Indoor cats have a much longer life expectancy than outdoor cats. Cars, dogs, disease are just a few dangers.

Keeping your cat cooped up is, unfortunately, the best thing you can do to respect OTHER cats and their owners. If your cat gets infected with feline AIDS, for example, it can go around infecting your neighbors' cats.

The American Bird Conservancy is interested in this because cats are estimated to kill hundreds of millions of birds each year in the United States. As many as 300 species of birds live in Brooklyn or stop over in Brooklyn during their migration. For some people it makes a difference that most these are not "junky" birds like Pigeons and House Sparrows, but beautiful, often beneficial species on their way from places like Costa Rican jungle to Canada to breed. When they stop in Brooklyn, they are often tired and hungry from thousands of miles of flying, and are easy targets for outdoor cats, which like to stalk them. Many of these birds are legally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, but people kill them in droves indirectly, unintentionally, by letting their kitties wander.

And another reason is because people that rescue cats in Brooklyn see cats on the street and automatically think that they are dumps. Hopefully your cat wears an ID collar and is microchipped.

Although I am not a cat, the thought that someone could trap me and neuter me is enough to make me consider staying inside.

The trick, of course, is finding the right people to hang out with.

*Careless speeding drivers

*Loose dogs that will make your cat a chew toy. Mean possums and other wild animals (hawks, raccoons..) that might injure it.

*Feral cats that will kill or seriously injure your cat in a fight

*Disease

*RAT POISON: I know for a fact people toss rat poison into empty lots, basements, construction sites, tree pits, parks and public areas. Poison is placed in food on purpose and set outside to attract pests and kill them. Your cat may eat it or eat a bird/rat/mouse or squirrel that has been poisoned. It's a horrific way to die.

*Crazy cults that sacrifice cats (true around these parts)

*Unstable, troubled kids that like to stone cats, shoot them (BBGuns or other weapons.) I knew kids that did this.

*Dumb people who take in cats, thinking they are lost (or maybe they just like the cat) and they just keep them.

That said. Pets should ALWAYS have their collar with tags on.

The good news is that 40 cats were trapped in Crown Heights (and a few in Bed Stuy) over the last three days and are on their way to the ASPCA today to be vetted. This will mean a lot fewer kittens this spring in that area. Forty down and a million to go ...
