a firestorm, but he is a protected minority in the us. Hopefully people learn from the LA riots. If you burn them shops. people won't come back and open them.

"We've got to do something about these Asians coming in, opening up businesses -- those dirty shops," Barry said Tuesday night, after winning the Democratic primary for the city's Ward 8 seat and effectively securing a third council term.

Barry went on to say: "They ought to go. I'll just say that right now, you know. But we need African-American businesspeople to be able to take their places, too."

You have to remember Marion Barry was arrested years ago for drug use and possession and then when he got out of jail was re-elected mayor. You're right about the racism but he's pandering to the electorate in Washington D.C. and that's who keeps voting him in.

Incredibly, DC is becoming more and more wealthy despite his leadership.

...even South East isn't as scary as it once was.

The area around UDC has become filled with strollers and coffee shops.

His not a apology apology lol. That's how the press phrased it as a "apology" by him.

Washington Councilman Marion Barry said Friday he could've rephrased his controversial remark about "dirty" Asian businesses in his district, but he refused to back down.

He said his adrenaline was flowing after Tuesday's primary victory, when he made the comment, and that he merely was trying to convey that the business community in his Ward 8 needs a new attitude. Asians run a large percentage of the ward's stores and small shops, he said.

“I said something that I probably could have phrased differently. What you mean is the same. You’re not going to have people who are exploiting us in this community.

In DC there is a rule that you can't build anything higher than the Capital. As a result, it loses a lot of money (and brains) to Arlington VA.

Among other quirky laws, this gives the Mayor of DC very little power. He ends up kind like a Marty Markowitz ....Depending on your perspective, he provides comic relief, or is a major embarrassment.

funny thing about M Barry is he probably makes more money than the shop owners. Why don't he put his money where his mouth is.
