    Nothing cheaper than sweat equity and doing it yourself.

    Not exactly cheap, but try Kings County Nursuries. They did our backyard about 10 years ago and its still in reasonable shape. The annuals have held up nicely, and while most of my grass has been overtaken once again by "Brooklyn greenery", I can still look out on a pretty decent yard.
