Defunct Washington Pizza Bagel Cafe soon to be grocery store?

For the two years we've in the neighborhood, the storefront at 664 Washington Avenue (just south of Bergen) has been marked "Pizza & Bagel Café" (what?) and has looked like a brand-new deli that never opened. Does anyone recall if the business ever operated?

Last week, the "Pizza & Bagel" sign came down, and on Monday, we spotted these gents covering the signboard with a new diamond-plate facade. When asked what was happening with the space, they replied it's becoming a "grocery" and had little else to say. The interior is clean and attractive, with ceramic tile surrounding beverage coolers and a deli case.

Hard to imagine the small space will be much competition to nearby Brooklyn Sub, but on the retail-stunted block between Bergen and St. Marks, we'll take whatever they're offering.

    Ah, yes, this place.

It was open for a brief period a few years ago. It simultaneously served indian food and pizza. The Indian was not very good, and didn't bother to try the pizza.

When it closed, it got a short thread: http://brooklynian.com/forum/prospect-heights/indian-pizzeria-on-bergen-washington-closed

They tried using peas as a pizza topping at one point.

If it become a grocery, we might be able to buy basmati rice there
