The fact that they don't list the address of the store makes me worry about their potential lack of business savvy. Where on Washington is this?

I think it is across from Kimchi Grill

It's at 669 Washington Ave. between St. Marks and Prospect

Here's an interview with the owners. They're very nice. Probably pretty frenzied getting ready for the opening. One of them has owned a Kung Fu studio for decades, and another owner is a longtime real estate broker (for the florist it's her first business).

I wonder if Washington Ave is willing to support this variety of boutique-high end of a store.

Park Delicatessen is similarly boutiquey/nichey and seems to be doing well on Classon.

I imagine the bar for success is lower when you own the property (as the Patch article suggests is the case). Hopefully it does ok...assuming people are less likely to get shot in front of fancy tea shop than a "video store" a few blocks down.

    agreed.

I wish them and their patrons the best of luck.

I thought they were opening July 9th? (According to the Patch.) The other invite at the top of the thread says July 18th?

I drink a lot of tea and would be happy to give their loose leaf teas a shot. I agree that this seems like a long-shot kind of place, but I wish them the best.

I received the invite above today, from the merchants association.

...it is not uncommon for opening dates to be pushed forward, or back.

i don't see it as a long shot, depending on how it is set up. is it a place sort of like a cafe, where people can sit and relax? then it will do fine. more so, a place where little girls (and big girls) can have tea parties and learn to arrange flowers? also fine. even beyond that, i have been looking for a place to buy loose leaf tea in the neighborhood for years. people kept telling me my only choice was to join the co-op...anyplace that can save me from the co-op will get lots of my business! and i think there are others like me out there!

If you don't find what you're looking for at Chrysanthemum, thelambchop, the old Leaf & Bean had looseleaf tea, and I am sure the new store when it opens on Lincoln Place (I think?) in the Slope it will have it as well.

thanks mishaps. i like jasmine green or jasmine white tea, and leaf & bean never had it when i went in. it also was hard for me to tell how frequently certain of their teas turned over and what was still fresh.

i used to get my tea from a frozen yogurt and tea shop on 5th avenue, but it was really overpriced. i started buying it on the internet, which is fine except for that it's a waste of packaging (too many tea tins).

I hope this place has what you're looking for, but if it doesn't, we get our loose tea online from Upton Tea Importers. It comes in resealable bags, which cuts down on some of the waste, and the quality is very good.

I love the idea of them scoring the flower contract for the Brooklyn Museum's wedding business.

DNA.info wrote: Weddings are big business for Chrysanthemum as well. With some of the the borough's most desirable wedding venues — the Brooklyn Museum and the Botanic Gardens — within walking distance, Lineberger is hoping to snare a new breed of bride searching for something of the borough's whimsical, DIY zeitgeist.

"My main goal is to captivate the Brooklyn bride, or even the Manhattan bride who's tired of the TriBeCa rooftop," Lineberger said. "The design is very seasonal, very natural — everything has a lot of movement."

I have a wedding to go to at Bklyn Botanic Gardens in Nov. The couple took the place but they didn't seem too impressed with the venue or the caterer. I still can't figure out why they booked it. I hear the valet parking will be quite expensive as there's really no place to park around there. And I wonder if they'd even need flower centerpieces when the whole place is full of flowers.

I think all wedding venues in NYC are insanely over priced, and over booked.

...The Gardens and the Museum may benefit from being part of a very uncompetitive industry.

I think the industry is quite competitive. This couple was looking for something a little more unique and I guess they wanted people to remember this affair. Of course, it remains to be seen if we remember it in a good or bad way.

I think the NYC wedding industry is a big racket. It's definitely a sellers' market, and the venues know that.

The problem may also stem from the customer (the bride) often being different than the person who pays the bill (the brides family).

It is often political suicide for the family to say to the bride "this is too expensive". It is heard as meaning "you are not worth it".

  • bkchickie

My parents would have had NO problem saying that to anything other than McDonalds! That explains why we paid for our own wedding. It was still hella expensive.

But I could totally get into this idea.

I went for the first time today. Very helpful ... We got a beautiful bunch of flowers to take to a brunch we were attending, but we were there nearly 20 minutes putting it together. Just be prepared for that.

Wanted to say that the male owner is not making homemade truffles. They smelled amazing. Definitely a great place to get a gift.
