Again, Ratner pioneers, this time to create the tallest pre-fab housing ever attempted. Ratner continues to use his vast wealth to take risks that benefit the less fortunate (my opinion, obviously). Winners here include people needing affordable housing, unions, the Brooklyn Navy Yard (where houses will be built) and CB 8 residents (who will probably have a set aside for affordable housing as community residents and access to living wage union jobs). And of course Ratner if his plans succeed. Congrats to Bruce.

If we are measuring this project in terms of units of housing created per dollar spent, it certainly makes financial sense to build this housing in a location where labor and materials can be utilized most efficiently.

The goal of creating jobs in New York City must be balanced with the goal of creating housing in NYC.

I.E. We are going to create a lot more housing in NYC if we create fewer expensive NYC jobs, and source our raw materials elsewhere.

hahaha yeah unions are the clear winner here with many fewer, and lower paid jobs than they were promised after years of shilling for ratner. as much as i am pro labor, there is a bit of schadenfreude after being personally threatened by union members at rallies and hearings.

The Daily News ran a piece on how displaced renters are going to get first dibs on the places in the new prefab building:

...although they didn't have a choice when they were told to move, it doesn't sound like they got a bad deal.

you guys are hilarious. 17 renters get dibs on apartments that aren't even built yet after 7 years. what about the other 800 residents and the homeless shelter? ratner is such a generous, giving fellow with our tax dollars.

What does AY have to do with the shelter?
