Donating Clothing in PH

Where can one go to donate clothing in PH? The mysterious bins appear and disappear sometimes. Also I read on a flyer attached to one that some bin owners were reselling the clothing for profit...?

alot of them do that. just goto a place you know.

There's one of the mysterious bins at Bergen and Grand right now. That's CH, actually, but not far.

the mysterious bins have some fine print on them suggesting that they have nothing to do with charity and instead are in the business of reselling to vintage clothing stores.

if you want your donations to go to the needy, there are a couple of places on the ph side of flatbush, somewhere between prospect and st mark's i think, that will take them.

There's always the Salvation Army on Flatbush, that's where we normally drop ours off...

there's also a Goodwill, I believe, on Fulton near Franklin.

Really? I have read that a lot of them sell it in bulk to LDC's - particularly in Africa - but we'll need to keep an eye on this situation. If we see the hipsters walking around in slightly soiled acid-washed jean shants, we'll know you're on to something.

What are shants? And do I have to go to Africa to get some?

And there's also the Family Reception Center thrift shop under the train bridge at 9th Street and Fourth Avenue, where their clients and Park Slope Safe Homes clients can choose clothing for free, and others can buy, with the proceeds going to the agency.

Growing up in MN, there was something similar (maybe the same?), but I think that they leaned a little more towards shorts, at least as far as fabric is concerned... anyway, all of the kids just called'em 'jams.' :? Never had a pair. I was a little broken up about it at the time, but I think I'm over it.

drano may be right about the clothes going to africa. i honestly don't remember what exactly the fine print said except 1) that it was clearly a for-profit operation, not a charity, and 2) to find that out you had to search for the fine print, which struck me as a bit deceptive. whether they sell the stuff to vintage shops or ldc's i couldn't tell you, although if it had some even modest redeeming social value i'd think they would advertise that.
