Hello fellow Brooklynians.

I need tips on used furniture stores (cause I can't afford this stuff new).

I have been avidly searching craigslist for used furniture, and I am having no luck because mostly it appears to be used Ikea and Crate and Barrel stuff, that everyone in my generation loves. I want to do my apartment in a kind of Edward Gorey, Victorian goth nightmare. I dont mind DIY reupholstering. I just need the pieces.

I am looking that stuff your grandma had in her house: french provincial/Victorian/rococo stuff that everyone hates except your grandma. This is what I mean:

How about estate sales on the Upper Westside?

If you can get there, I would check out used furniture places on 4th Ave. I have found stuff there as well.

Also there are a few "lots" that used to have people who sold stuff in them. There was one on 3rd Ave and like Pacific and one on Dean off Vanderbilt. Keep checking craigs list and Brownstoner for people who post when they are tossing old furniture, etc.

Also I have heard lots of good stuff about this place in Gowanus:

Have not been there but am dying to check it out.

I was also going to suggest Film Biz Recycling. They have really imaginative, unique stuff because it comes right out of film sets (and proceeds go to a great cause). I also like Fork and Pencil which has a shop at the top of Bergen St at Court Street (and then they have a little antiquey shop with smaller goods at Court & Warren.)You should come some time and check out our curved door here at Escape Guesthouse. :chef:

Those rich old hags, haggle over shit stained ripped broken up furniture. they would sell a used toilet seat for 1000$ and consider it a bargain!

Which one is at 3rd ave and around pacific?

Its on 3rd Ave between Dean and Pacific in a lot next door to the church. I have not been by that way in a while though. On McDonald Avenue (right off of 20th street - along the graveyard) there are lots of out of town trucks to stop there and sell sofas, chairs, recliners, etc.

There's a place on 5 Ave, between 15/16 Streets, that has a huge variety of furniture. They might have something you're looking for...and if not, if you talk to the guys, they'll be on the lookout. (Sorry I don't remember the name!)
