do we know this woman? (we meaning me, of course. I don't think I do but ...)

She's been a NY Magazine writer for a few years and moved to PS a year or so ago. She used to write about sex and dating. See what it can lead to?

ha! I know her. Not literally, but it's hard not to know those people who bring babies to adult-type restaurants at the expense of others.

It's usually not so much a case of "can't discipline" as "won't discipline". I know there are some well-meaning (but misguided, IMO) souls out there who want to be a friend before being a parent, but too often it's just laziness. I won't even get into the Taking Children Seriously school of parenting.

Exactly. We have three, count 'em, three boys, the oldest of whom is now eleven. It became abundantly clear early on that there would be few, if any, restaurants where we could take one, two or three without annoying and/or inconveniencing ourselves and others. Without starting this whole thread up again, I just want to say that there are people who don't take their kids to restaurants until the kids are good and ready. It's no fun for anyone, the parents least of all. Civilize them when and where you can, but try not to inflict your own pain on others when possible. In my opinion, practice doesn't make perfect in this case. Time does. Wait until they become human. Or of (legal) drinking age.

I went to High School with her, but haven't been in touch since. I did spot her at Amorina one time sans kid.

I would have replied earlier, but I had to go throw up after reading this tripe from "oh gee another journo in the neigborhood" who is undergoing some angst-ridden transition.

She should have consulted one more shrink for her article who would have mentioned that GUILT informs decisions to take those out-of-control kids with you everywehere you go.

Thank god that there are still owners in PS and PH that vocally discourage the stroller brigades from taking over their restaurants.

Well, yeah, she does come off as a bit annoying (do I detect a note of smartmom?) but at least she's figured out what a pain in the ass she can be. A lot of the "stroller brigade" folks aren't close to figuring that out - or worse, don't much care...

She is really annoying, but I have to take back my statement that she is more annoying than Smartmom. At least she appears to be developing some awareness of her annoyingness. Meanwhile, Smartmom has this to say about Amy Sohn's essay:

"I'm sure a lot of people perceive me as a typical Park Slope mom. But I am so much more detailed and interesting."

you think it's bad now? look out!!! my friend and i were quaffing cocktails at beast this evening lamenting that we independently noticed a proliferation of pregnant women this side o'vanderbilt. assuming they are not all planning to move to maplewood, the coming winter, when such moms can start drinking again, will be challenging for those of us who adore (silent inconspicuous or domeciled during the dinner hours) children.

Reading that made me want to set someone on fire. Smartmom dissecting Amy Sohn?!?! Amy Sohn with smartmom's problems?!?! It's the perfect storm of self-indulgent mediocrity! I remember the good ol' days when Amy could devote an entire column to farting.

To be fair, however, that is the best piece I've ever read by Amy.

I know her, went to camp with her. She is a smart, cool girl, who has probably chilled out considerably since getting married and having a baby. I read the article as well and actually liked it. I know she grew up in Brooklyn if that means anything.

What's up with all the Stuy hating? I mean, I didn't go there or anything .. ahem ...

Has anyone else noticed the proliferation of nannies in PH? It seems like the number of nannies -- usually of a different ethnicity than the baby -- has quintupled over the last year. In a neighborhood that still has a noticable amount racial tension (though some may not agree with that) I think this phenomenon is increasing the weirdness.

Amy has a serious problem. Its called getting older. You do things when you get older, like talk about your kids, that would have made you retch when you were a little younger, but you do it anyway.
She should get over herself. I do have to say that the comparisons to Smartmom are not fair. Amy can write circles around Smartmom (which is not saying a whole hell of a lot).
