The prostitutes of Pacific Ave, between Franklin and Classon

When you own a medium size dog, you tend to end up walking down all of the streets of your neighborhood, just for variety.

While your dog searches for places to pee and you try to keep him from eating discarded chicken bones, you notice things.

Throughout the years I have noticed signs of prostitution (Used Condoms. Addicted-looking women loitering.) on the blocks of Pacific and Dean between Classon and Franklin.

I assumed they serviced the men who were residents of the Bedford/Atlantic Men's shelter, men who worked at the local autobody shops, clients of the various methadone clinics and/or men who sold drugs to the above populations.

I assumed the actual services were provided in a windowless, old, beat up white van that always seemed to be nearby.

Based on their appearance, I assumed they were stuck in hard, miserable lives.

Based on their appearance, I assumed they were street wise.

It seems not all of them are.

Note to Self: When arguing while committing a crime, don't involve the police.

A 35-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man were arrested on prostitution charges after one of them called the cops over a dispute over payment.

The NYPD were called to Pacific Street between Classon and Franklin on a report of sexual assault just after 5:20 p.m. on March 24.

But upon questioning, both parties agreed that no sexual assault had occurred. Rather, there had been a disagreement over payment.

The man was charged with patronizing a prostitute and the woman was charged with prostitution for allegedly agreeing to have sex for $40.

And here I thought the internet made street level prostitution redundant. Glad to see some people are keeping the traditional ways alive!

I suspect this population has no Internet access.

...proving, once again, that we are merely wasting our time here.

You mean their from they before time?! Gasp! Living without the internet how do they know which is today's most popular meme?

Seriously though I'm not surprised theres still some hooking going on in Crown Heights.

I don't see them often enough to know whether there is a pattern in terms of times or dates, but they aren't there every time I walk by.

The most I have seen is four women at a time.

I'd sorta wondered what their going rate was. $40 seems about right.

I'm with newguy. I thought all prostitution was done via craigslist.

    Jack-

I suspect the non-Internet ones are competing on the basis that they are available NOW, as opposed to SOON.

When services are provided in a van, is that considered an in-call, or an out-call?

I am not on these blocks that often, and when I am, I usually don't see them.

    You can't count on me....

People, you now have as much info as I do.

Note: If you are looking to make the Pretty Woman II, Julia Roberts wasn't there.

With their permission, a local photographer (Chris Arnade) regularly takes photos of the sex workers of Hunts Point. Here is some of his work:

There used to be lots of hookers on 4th and Pacific. Wonder if they got pushed up that far. I still see a fair amount around the Douglas Pool area - but those are crazy crack hoes.

I think only the lowest tier of prostitutes still literally works on the street.

Let's face it, if you're resorting to prostitution and it's not out call, you're not far up on the food chain anyway.

Most women in the sex trade are addicted, and/or come from backgrounds which include sexual abuse as a child.

  • pragmaticguy

The point is, there's lots of reasons for doing things. Making excuses doesn't help the situation and if I was a gal who was abused as a child, especially sexually, I think I'd try my hardest NOT to have sex...especially sex without love. As for being an addict, yes it's true it's one of the few ways to make money to feed the addiction but obviously these folk do not want to get better. They talk about it, but they're not doing much about it so their actions are all we have to go by. Sort of like "Waiting for Godot."

Julia Roberts was a real find in this regard.

According to the movie, all she had to do was meet a rich guy. She had no addictions, trauma history, mental health problems.

...she was just a lonely princess waiting for a prince to save her.

Like it was stated at the end of the movie..."all your dreams come true in Hollywood."

My dreams certainly don't involve Pacific Ave and Classon, or Hunts Point

This recent article in the Economist focused on the macro trends affecting British prostitutes.

This thread on Brooklynian may be the closest thing our folks receive.
