Another one bites the dust- Imhotep vegan shop/takeout closed

I drove by this weekend and noticed that the sign was down, a dumpster was outside and work was being done.

I'm somewhat surprised that the vegan spot couldn't survive the changeover of the neighborhood. Especially since it had lasted here for over ten years.

Does anyone know what the issue was? Rent increases, loss of customer base, owners deciding to move to a bigger spot or do something else?

As a non-vegan, I have to say this place had some of the best food.

i actually joined this forum to ask about nostrand, particularly imhotep. its recent closing (after 26 years) is really disappointing. i saw some folks poking around there a few weeks ago though, so it looks as though the space might be occupied fairly quickly? any ideas on what it might be?

here's some press about it from a few years ago, back when it was open:

From what I understand the owner of the building also owned the restaurant. He recently sold, the listing I saw included both the building and restaurant but I guess the new owner has different plans for the store.

As far as Caribbean vegetarian restaurants go, IMHOTEP was just "OK". IMO, their food needed more spices and their sea moss was downright awful. There are far better options elsewhere in Brooklyn.
