Crunch Gym Opening in Crown Heights

On Empire and Utica.

This is really great, but I wish there was a decent, reputable gym opening up in the "Crown Heights West" area. I hate schlepping my work out stuff around the city.

They should TOTALLY open up a Crunch Gym in western crown heights. I think it would get a LOT of traction and community support, especially if they partnered with some community organizations to do public health awareness events and demonstrations.

I'm not sure Western CH has a big building [like the one above] that doesn't have uses more profitable than a gym.

"Yah, Brah! Feel the Burn!" But seriously many will welcome a gym in Crown Heights.

This is really good news! I think there's been demand for that service in the neighborhood for a long time.

At one time there was a proposal to make the armory on the corner of Bedford and Atlantic into a YMCA. It would be great for both Crown Heights and Bed Stuy.

That armory is presently used as a shelter, and the shelter system is presently overflowing. So, I would not hold my breath on it being converted to a gym anytime soon.

Bed Stuy already has a lovely YMCA. Try it.

That YMCA is great. I lived around the corner until I moved to Crown Heights. It would be nice to have a gym that's in easy walking distance though.

markhor, not sure if either of these meet your needs but there are two different gyms just off of Nostrand: Crow Hill Crossfit on Park http://www.crowhillcrossfit.com/ and Nostrand Fitness on St. Marks (which is significantly less web savvy) http://www.nostrandfitness.com/pricelist.html

thanks! ive looked into both. i'm into crossfit but can't start because of horrible knee injuries. i always pass by the gym on st marks, but ive never been in. it seems pretty barebones though. i'd also add brooklyn fit lab on franklin to this list, though i haven't been yet. they're currently having a 10 dollar a day "special".

thankfully i have access to a large chain gym near my office. it also gives me an excuse to slack on the weekends.

That's too bad. That location would have been within walking distance for me!

I'm in the SW corner of CH, near PLG. I think the Crunch gym near the Seventh Avenue train station on the Q is the closest gym to me.

Opening new gyms in the neighborhood is a good sign.

South CH/PLG definitely is ripe for a gym.

You can make that point in a current survey that FEPMA, the Flatbush Ave merchants group, is sponsoring:

Actually, brunosmum and whynot are talking about the OTHER armory on bedford, not the one at Union/Bedford in South CH.

    *ripe for another gym.

The Crunch on 7th is still more convenient (via easy bus/subway/bike trip) than the new one on Empire and Utica will be for me in PLG.

The people on their facebook page seem very angry - looks like they paid for memberships thinking the gym would open July 2013 and are now having trouble getting refunds.
Also, the floorplans don't show room for a group exercise classroom, which is strange -- good group classes are the Crunch brand's strongest suit.
