Between the shooting on 6/24 on St. Johns and last night's I'm beginning to feel like my office is in Dodge City. Oh well, another job for the S.O.S. team. This is only a few doors down from where that guy who got stabbed in the neck last year after the West Indian parade was.

Yes, violence is way too common in the area.

SOS is planning a shooting response at (or near) the location for 6 PM, Friday June 28th

...and trying to get a feel for whether this is the type of killing that is likely to result in retalitaory killings and shootings.

That is the aspect of the program I feel has the potential to make the most impact.

From reading the Daily News article, it seems as if the individual killed was known to the local community, and it followed a dispute

In Brooklyn, a 30-year-old man was gunned down in a Crown Heights at 11:34 p.m. after an apparent dispute, cops said.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was standing in front of 1316 St. John's Place when the confrontation took place. The shooter blasted the man three times in the torso and once in the back. The victim was brought to Interfaith Hospital and pronounced dead.

"I heard six shots, really fast, like pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop," said Ismael Medina, 59, who lives across the street from where the shooting occurred.

Other neighbors showed little sympathy for the victim.

"All I'm going to say is it's a beautiful night," said an onlooker who refused to give his name.

Damn, you know you are an asshole when this is the response to your murder.

He also doesn't strike me as real bright.

After a murder, it is not uncommon for the friends of the deceased to lash out at people whom they think killed their friend, but ALSO people whom they perceive to be unsympathetic (or disrespectful) to the deceased.

While this onlooker was smart enough to not give the Daily News reporter his name, there likely wasn't a whole lot of people who spoke to the DN reporter that night, and lots of locals are probably able to link him to the comment.

    Some additional details here:

abclocal wrote: The victims included a man who was coming to the aid of his girlfriend in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

The 31-year-old man was shot in the torso outside 1316 Saint Johns Place just after 11:30 p.m.

He had been called there by his girlfriend, who was in a dispute with another man who had grabbed her.

Police say when the victim arrived, he was shot by the other man, who then fled the scene.

The victim was pronounced dead at Interfaith Hospital. No arrest were immediately made.

This makes me believe the shooter lives locally, and that the police need to make it very public that they are making apprehending him a priority.

Cops have their mobile "eye in the sky" parked in front of my office this morning which is down the block from the shooting. They might be expecting trouble or trying to ward it off. Also a foot patrol on the block. Last summer they had one of these on the block. It was there for six weeks.

In such circumstances, I usually hope for rain.

Rain keeps people inside. It cools people off, and tends not to impair judgement in the same way that stifling heat does.

I hear it supposed to rain this afternoon.

It's supposed to rain much of the week.

Perhaps it would be best if it stopped raining at 5:30 PM on Friday, then started again at 7:00 PM.

That way, more people would be likely to come out and learn about the very thoughtout effort to reduce violence in the neighborhood.

Or maybe just rain for the whole weekend? I really think people need to cool off.

As noted above, my request is that it stop raining for 1.5 hours on Friday.

In order for my wish to be granted, it should begin raining now, and stop at

    5:30 pm on Friday.

It would then begin again at 7 PM, and then not stop again until I requested it.

I promise I would use my powers wisely, and -clearly- my intentions are good.

Ah, got something fun going on for exactly 1 and half hours tomorrow? I fail to see how a couple hours of sun light could hurt.

Actually, I won't be able to make tomorrow's gathering of people working to reduce violence in the area.

I am just trying to give those I know, and those I have not yet met, some help...
