The Daffodil Project is a 9/11 commemoration. You can get free bulbs to plant in any public space -- parks, or the tree well on your block -- by signing up at

http://www.ny4p.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=35&Itemid=60

Bulb distribution is in October - you pick up, and/or Zipcar is doing a distribution.

yeah! glad other people are enthused
someone planted through this program in all the tree wells up the road from me and it looks amazing in the spring

I'm braving the dog pee and tree roots to put some on my block this year . . . anybody know off the top of their head how many bulbs fit in a tree well? That's about eight square feet of dirt . . .

    o YEAH!
    this couldn't be easier . . .
    Brooklyn pick up is

    Saturday, October 7
    10 a.m.–1 p.m.
    Prospect Park Greenmarket
    At Grand Army Plaza

still time to sign up -- and I think you have to sign up in advance to get bulbs. you also have to sign something that says you're planting them like you're s'posed to.

This is a project available all over NYC, but it's not getting much traffic over in the Brooklyn board, so I'm relocating it over here for awhile . . .

I think this board needs some fleurs . . .

Pitu - I ordered mine on line and did not get a notice to pick mine up at the Green Market. Do you know if I need to have anything to pick them up (like the e-mail they sent me confirming)?

    hi stace
I ordered online as well, a couple weeks ago -- yesterday I got the email notice about pickup. Did you order for Brooklyn or Manhattan pu? They are very particular about sticking to the borough you ordered for...

pm me your email if you want me to forward the notice to you - I think you just need to give them your whole name, but I'd have to read the thing again...

at first i thought it was the pick up and was confused
then i realized it was a planting event

i ordered for brooklyn as well, but have yet to receive any pick up instructions, (only got the confirmation so far)

The Botanic Garden is having a free street tree pit gardening class this coming Tuesday night . . .

    Tuesday Oct 3, 6-8pm
FREE Street Tree Pit Gardening class at BBG

Give a hand to the silent street tree! Street trees do so much to
improve our environment, but they receive almost no care. In this
class, learn the benefits of street trees, how to improve the health
of a street tree by caring for the "pit" (including whether or not to
plant in the pit), as well as how to get more in-depth information on
    street tree care. Preregistration required.

    Brooklyn Botanic Garden
    1000 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn
    6-8p; $free

    ah HA!
Stacey kindly forwarded me her bulb email - the bulbs are stuck on a barge in the Atlantic, and the distribution has been moved up to the weekdays, October 24, 25, and 26 from 4-7 p.m.
    Prospect Park/Litchfield Villa (The Mansion)
5th Street and Prospect Park West

which also probably means that if one wanted to sign up, there's prolly still time . . .

    Subject: o well, it was a good idea . . .

OCT 19: We have more bad news: your daffodil bulbs still have not arrived from the Netherlands (they're on a barge somewhere between here and there). Unfortunately, we have to postpone the borough daffodil bulb distributions until further notice.

But don't worry, we promise to let you know as soon as they arrive and we will try to schedule distributions with as much advance notice as possible.

Please be sure to check our website often, because that's where we'll post updates as to the bulbs' whereabouts.

Again, we'll let you know as soon as the bulbs arrive in the city. We sincerely apologize for this unavoidable delay and we thank you for your continued cooperation.

    Sincerely,
Your friends at New Yorkers for Parks
    About The Daffodil Project.

The Daffodil Project returns with free bulb distribution this Saturday:

    Brooklyn: Saturday Oct 27, 9am-Noon
Prospect Park Green Market at Grand Army Plaza

This year you just show up and pick them up. You might have to sign a form that says you promise to plant them in a public space (like your tree well, not your backyard)
