Cut A Rug

According to New York Magazine, the neighborhood is up and coming. Sure. Fine. Whatever. As the writer noted, we have a slew of everything boutique: bars, restaurants, shops, bakeries, laundromats, and bodegas. What is lacking, however, is a solid place to dance at least as far as I know. And what do I know? Not much. Hand over fist, I would rather drink in the hood and dance in the hood than trek into Manhattan in search of a club. You got the skinny? Drop some knowledge on me because I went to Soda last weekend to escape the Mosquito Army in my apartment and I was disappointed. Quality getdown grooves in a room full of sofas and small talk. Go figure.

rarely does dancing occur at Soda outside of their parties (NYE, for instance). I've seen dancing at Ripple, too, but that's also usually late at night and unscheduled.
most dancing I've seen/participated in in brooklyn has been at the rub, starlite and rubulad - all not in PH. oh, and at the royal oak, but that was to horrible indie music and everyone was so fucked up on coke I think they weren't dancing, they were actually jiggling nervously.
we have a fantastic venue for raves or house parties in the 'hood - the way back room of the studio on st. marks and vanderbilt is huge and perfect for a nice DJ setup and dancing. not sure why no one's organized anything there. perhaps it's time to contact enabler.

Is there even a market for a dance club in Prospect Heights? I mean, Park Slope is beyond "up and coming" and as far as I know, there's still no place to dance in that neighborhood.

well, i tend to dance all by myself in my apartment daily--usually between the hours of 1145-12am... not sure where else dancing occurs in this hood though.

I would love a place to dance! A bar with a nice dance floor and some seating for those shy people. With different music themes on each night, good DJ's and maybe a live band once in a while. That's what PS and PH needs.

So why doesn't this area have any dance clubs? Is it just not accepted/wanted/liked?

dancing is illegal without a license.

Cattyshack is a good place to dance. It's queer of course, but pretty mixed on some nights.

People were dancing on Friday night at Loki Lounge in PS. I've rolled home from Manhattan and into Sepia and danced till 4am on some nights.

Spectrum! Alas, they closed and sold the floor in 2005. Here's an NPR piece about the sale:

The club itself was equal parts sad and fun; I got to go and dance on that floor a couple of times before the place shut down. It had a nice bounce to it. TOTALLY made me feel like I was channelling Tony Manero. :D/

There's always Sputnik -- but it's down in Clinton Hill on Taaffe (a block over from Classon) between Dekalb and Willoughby. They have a lot of fun dance parties. And just a 10 minute ride down the B48.

I also like The Royale (when the record player isn't skipping) in Park Slope.

Sputnik is cool. Royale, not so much- since they fired all the locals and brought in out of towners.
Sputnik- actually worth the town car.
